All videos start paused on apple TV

Are you absolutely certain on this? That’s the complete opposite of what I get.

I’ll do another test session tonight with the old audio engine and confirm.

Re-tested with the old audio engine. It works “normally” (starts muted for a second then plays correctly) most of the time, but sometimes it plays without audio at all. And I think the audio sometimes drop during and not at the beginning but I haven’t reproduced this behaviour in this test session.

Thanks for getting back.
I’m really surprised as I’m fairly sure every reported case previously has been with the new audio engine being the cause and switching to the old one is the cure. It certainly is for me.

As I also use AirPods Pro and Max for Spatial audio which requires the NEW audio engine so I’m actually jealous as it sounds like with what you see I would never have to switch audio engines again.
Which model ATV 4K are you using?

Both audio engines have their problems. The new one is less annoying to me. I’d like to clarify something. With the new engine the videos don’t actually start “paused”. They are on “play” but stuck. You can just hammer the rewind button and it’ll start playing eventually. If you press the play button to make it start, you have to press an even number of times so you don’t end up leaving it paused.

With the old engine, when there’s no sound you have to back out and try again, or switch back and forth between transcoding and direct play. And it can happen at any point while watching. Several times. That’s much more annoying to me.

Anyways, I installed Infuse and it works great. I don’t mind paying a monthly fee to avoid having to fight the tv.

As for model, I have both a first generation 4K and the latest generation 4K which I bought last week hoping it would resolve this problem. The new one worked perfectly because it came with tvOS 16.x but the exact same issue appeared as soon as it updated to 17.3.

dual HomePod’s connected to my 4k appletv: it’s been getting worse with every release since ~October. set to new player currently, because old player doesn’t work with most 4k content that I have (understandable). but the drop out of audio, and the pause at the start or continuation of any video is getting much worse - now it needs an app kill and restart to get video playing again. this is new behavior, and it seems to be getting much worse with every release.

both of my appletv’s have HomePods connected - my bedroom tv only has one, and I’ve been willing to put up with the sync issues that started occurring with the old player as of ~October, but even that appears to be getting worse.

is there any hope of it getting better?

As a fellow Apple TV Plex user with HomePods then no.
As a Plex ninja who once bought a £3000 Polk Audio system and AVR system just to tell us we’re doing it wrong :joy::joy: There are for sure some patronising ■■■■■■■ on these forums

How the hell can something get worse than unusable?

Beyond @elan stepping in? No absolutely no chance. Perhaps he knows who’s been fired (they cared but didn’t know)
Since then they knew but didn’t care?

I just want to know as a lifetime plex pass user whether I should find another solution or try to wait for plex to solve it - I rarely use the shared library functionality and definitely don’t use the “free to watch”, I just want something that works, even if I have to write off what I paid for the plex lifetime - should I continue to hope that it will be fixed, or will it be ignored and I need to find a different solution?

the latest appletv update seems to fix the starting pause, but appears to break resuming, especially after the appletv has suspended itself when plex is paused, now requiring me to force-quit plex in order to resume. resuming in this state stays paused until you hit play two more times in order to resume.

so, in some cases better, in other cases worse. one step forward, two steps back.

I spoke too soon, it appears to only start correctly under some (indecipherable) conditions.

Hey Plex, maybe be professional and state clearly that you can’t afford to buy a HomePod to test your product and therefore it’s not supported?

@Nuit
Are you on the TestFlight beta?
I have a pair of HomePods 2nd Gen and no longer have the issue of paused videos with the new Video Player.
Nor do I have audio suddenly going mute after a while (if you have encountered that issue also.)

That’s very encouraging! Thanks for sharing that. I don’t mind waiting for a public release. As long as a fix is coming down the line I can be patient

I should add that not everything is perfect as yet.
The new Audio engine is currently unavailable (so reliable Spatial Audio is gone with it.)
But I think that may be simply to take away a variable whilst they figure out all the video playback issues.

Generally though I’m finding it pretty usable, Specially for TV shows. Navigating TV shows in Infuse is still less than stellar.
For movies I still prefer Infuse.
Spatial Audio availability. On the fly video scrubbing and more importantly native Profile 8 Dolby Vision rather than Plex “fake DV.”

All that said outside of what’s mentioned above, my 4K encodes and remux movies do all seem to play smoothly in Plex. Moreover resuming a partially watched high bitrate movie is now both smooth and fast for most files.

It’s unclear if there was an update of the Plex app on AppleTv (I’m not sure if there’s any way to check) but for the last few days, I’ve had zero problem.

I hope I’m not speaking too fast but so far so good

And… I spoke too fast.

I’m also experiencing this - mildly infuriating - issue. To the point where I’m now actively testing Emby and Jellyfin (which may bring their own issues) but it’s another thing on top of other things with Plex these days.
