AppleTV 4K Client stops Audio after a few hours

Server Version#: 1.29.0.6244
Player Version#: 8.10 (4002)
After a few hours of shuffling videos on AppleTV 4K the audio stops working. All direct play. The sound still comes from the AppleTV, meaning if I click through on the remote I hear the chimes from the remote selections. restarting the same episode, sound works… and when shuffling the same episode could come up again and sound works and it might not work on the next episode. This just started in the past few weeks. Happens on both the beta and non-beta versions of the tvOS app.

Yes, I can confirm I have started experiencing the same problem within the last few days.

Playing a few episodes of a show - sound will stop after the third or fourth episode. If I exit out and go back into the episode, sound resumes again.

I have the same with h.265 and h. 264 encoded HD files in direct play on appleTV.

I am also having this issue and have been for the last couple of weeks. When watching TV shows, about every 3rd episode plays without audio. Backing all the way out of the app and coming back in usually cures the issue. Is there any update or workaround for this?

AppleTV 4K - tvOS Version 16.0 (20J373)
Plex App Version 8…9 (3900)

Having a similar issue on one Apple TV 4K (but not the other one I own).

Audio will not start with a new show. At first once in a while and then all the time until the app has been force quitted and reloaded.

I reset the Apple TV and the problem persists.

Problem started about a week ago.

It renders the app almost unusable when watching for a while. It’s very frustrating.

I am having all the audio issues mentioned above and some additional ones.

All files tested (SD, HD, 4K, HDR h264 and h265) will have audio stutters where the audio will completely cut out for about 1 second multiple times while watching.

I did not have this issue until I updated to tvOS 16.

Just to pile on, I’m also having this:

  • first episode I watch of a show direct plays normally
  • if I allow it to auto continue to next episode, there is no audio
  • info pane on AppleTV and dashboard on server show no change, state still fully direct playing

If I hit back to return to the main plex menu, then if I hit play on the episode immediately I still get no sound, but if I swipe to another control and back again, or wait about 10 seconds, before hitting play, then I get audio goodness.

Happens for both HEVC and H.264 videos, with a mix of Stereo ACC and AC3, and 5.1 AC3 and DTS streams.

App on AppleTV is up to date, TVOS is the last 15 version (updated the day before 16 came out then turned off auto-update, just in case there were bugs for others to find on day/week one)

Server was updated 7 days ago, problem reproduces since then still.
Server is running in a Debian 11 LXC container.

Ping me if there is anything I could test to get more useful info to help narrow the cause down

Just to let you know we’re looking into this, thanks for the reports.

Thanks! Let us know if you need anything from end users; It’s easily reproducible on Apple TV 4K gen 1 and 2.

Same issues as several others. I lose audio after playing first episode. I can play same episode with Infuse and works perfectly. I did not start having this issue till about a week ago but not aware of any updates I made.

I have the same problem as well started with tvOS 16. no issue with ios16 like ipad/iphone just the appletv client.

I’m glad I’m not the only one with this issue.

I’m having the same issue. When a TV episode finishes and Plex automatically moves to the next episode, that next episode has no audio. Exiting and going back in fixes the issue. The issue seemed to start when the Apple TV OS updated to version 16.

Same here…no Audio (Episode and Titel Music) after playing some episodes. Restarting the Plex Player App fixing the issue).

Yep. Same issue. It’s tough when Bluey is the show :joy:

This!

My Apple TVs auto updated to 16.1 yesterday and this has gotten significantly worse since then. Almost every episode after the first is this way. Definitely can’t go past 2 episodes. Also a weird thing where when shuffling, if I don’t have the audio issue, it just doesn’t move to the next episode. Just a black screen indefinitely until I click the back button. This happens anywhere from 3-6 episodes into a shuffled playlist of tv shows.

I am having the same issue with TVOS 16. But it doesn’t need a.few hours. It’ll trigger sometimes immediately with the first autoplay. Plus, it seems to coincide with a video freezing at a black screen sometimes. 75% of the time it is no audio. %20 it is blank screen. %5 it plays fine. All on tried and true videos that have worked for years.

Having the same issue with no audio after the first episode and the occasional black screen. I’ve found that pulling down the Playback Settings menu and either Re-selecting the currently selected playback quality or choosing another playback quality will fix the issue without having to exit out of the show.

Also updated to IOS 16.1. Problem still present. After playing an episode I lose audio. Same files play fine on Infuse
