For the past 2 months or so I would say, most if not all videos are starting paused. Meaning I go to start a show or movie and Plex will load it and I get to a black screen with the timer at 0:00. It will stay there until I hit pause on the remote then unpause and then it will start playing. I would say it happens 8 or 9 out of every 10 times.
on what Apple TV model are you experiencing this?
Iām using my Apple TV almost daily and havenāt seen that behavior yet (which isnāt saying you donāt see it⦠just that itās indeed some odd behavior).
Are you using the latest gen Apple TV?
Are you using an AirPlay device for audio (HomePods or similar?)
Does it happen with every type of media in those 9 times out of 10 or is it most prevalent with 4K HDR?
I just got rid of my Soundbar setup and hadnāt tested this issue for a few weeks beforehand but am (possibly incorrectly) remembering it didnāt happen with the Soundbar only with AirPlay.
Either way in settings turn off the completely broken new audio engine and you should be good to go.
They are 4k Apple TVās, using the Plex apple TV app. We do have homepod miniās in 3 of the 4 rooms that have apple tv boxes, and use those hompod miniās as the audio devices. It happens 8 or 9 out of 10 times no matter the media, but all media is either 720p or 1080p, mostly 1080p, and all direct play.
On the Apple TV in the Plex app.
Click the cog wheel to go to settings
Scroll down quite a lot and you will see
āUse old video playerā
āUse old audio engineā
Turn āuse old audio engineā to ON
Leave āuse old video playerā as OFF.
Itās the NEW AUDIO ENGINE most likely causing your issues (it is for me) and not the new video player.
Plex Media Server Version: 4.108.0 (Mac OS Sonoma 14.1)
Apple TV Plex Player Version: 8.26 (7089) - Apple TV 4K 2021 tvOS 17.0 (21J354)
Mine is the 2021 Apple TV 4K, and the issue I ran into was that not all, but only certain videos (located on the Plex Media Server) would start but then immediately stop, and couldnāt be restarted. Others would never start at all. I misread the directions above from Trust_The_Process, and I flipped āUse Old Video Playerā to ON and that fixed the problem. So it works either way with one on and one off or maybe with both on?.
I wonder what the actual glitch is? For me it started after the tvOS 17.0 update, but I had also updated the server rig (MacBook Pro M1 Pro) to Sonoma 14.1, so not sure if the issue is the server or the Apple TV.
I was about ready to start tearing my hair out, so thanks to everyone who has contributed to this thread.
Thanks so much for posting this issue. I have been struggling for some time with the same problem.
My Details:
tvOS version 17.1(21K69)
Apple TV Model A1842 (32GB)
Plex Server Version:1.32.7.7621
Plex iOS app version 8.27.1(7360)
Homepod mini model MY5G2LL/A
Homepod mini iOS version 17.1(21K69)
I typically will curate Playlists in shuffle mode with TV show episodes this time of year matching the holidays (halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, NewYears) I noticed during Halloween each time a video would finish and the next video would countdown but would start like in a paused position.
The various video container formats and quality vary. The vast majority would be considered 720p SD.
I do have the Apple TV tied to a Homepod mini for all audio output.
I am going to try to use the āold player settingā to see if that works. I hope it does but I hope this feedback also helps get the new players to working better before the old players get dropped.
You should be fine using the old audio engine and leaving the new video player enabled.
@McWanke Is there any news on this? @chrisallen apparently replicated this issue several weeks ago (I think with an LG AirPlay capable soundbar) Since then there been no news at all.
To recap it only happens using the new audio engine.
But this gets tiresome for those of us with HomePods AND AirPods with constant switching between the new and old audio engine.
Also I should add that just before reproducing the issue, Chris did say he was gonna be OOO for a while so no disrespect to him. It would however be great to know if anything is happening behind the scenes. Right now I would settle for some on the fly switching between the new and old audio engine. Itās just bizarre that using other Apple devices with another Apple device is so problematic and has always seemed so low on Plex radar over the years.
The old player setting worked fine last night. Again thanks to the forum for visibility into the issue.
I do plan on getting a new full size Homepod for Christmas and I will keep this setting in mind to test to see if the situation improves with the hardware upgrade.
Iāve been experiencing this too, for a few months. Hopefully this issue is being worked on, and a solution is coming - that doesnāt require me to switch audio engines.
Just so everyone knows, I am experiencing this too!
I just ended up enabling old video player, and it fixed itself.
I had no idea āold audio engineā was an option cos i just remembered most things got fixed if you use old video player.
(ps: AppleTV 4k gen 1, HomePod Mini stereo pair - but was even having this āpause when startā on video playlist when TV audio was used. ps: never got it to start playing - even when hitting play/pause.)
So we have a workaround for this regression bugāanyone official got this logged for fixing?
Using the old audio player always seems to result in 5ā10 seconds of silence at the start of each video for me, so while itās a good workaround, itās not perfect.
I have this problem too. I have a first gen AppleTV 4K. Then I bought a new one that came with tvOS 16 installed, and no problem! Then it updated to 17 and the problem returned.
Instead of pressing pause/play I press rewind, that works too. Itās still super annoying though.
Please fix this, as itās impossible to downgrade an Apple TV.
