I’m new to PLEX and new to self-hosted media streaming. I’m working through digitizing my wife’s and my cd library, and wondering how to organize them. I’ve seen examples of people creating separate libraries for their individual music categories, especial people who have extensively organize their file directory, and multiple libraries seems an inelegant solution as it eliminates those other libraries from a possible search. It seems a better solution using the collections filter. However, manually entering information for hundreds of cd’s is not going to happen. So my suggestion is to allow people to create their own collections though the file naming convention (kinda like Nextfilx). Ex:
/media/music/ Named-Collection /artist/album/track-file.typ
This extra directory filter is already established for Various Artists. Adding a folder naming convention to the filter (ex: ‘- collection’) may provide a quick, bulk, automatic, and customizable method to establish collections. And, though it may come at an administrative cost, named collections could be nested bridging other categories, and allowing the user to establish their own collection structure without excluding any results from other collections. Ex:
/media/movies/ Action -collection/ Marvel -collection/ Wolverine -collection/ …
/media/movies/ Romance -collection/ Marvel -collection/ Deadpool -collection/ …
/media/tv-shows/ Marvel -collection/ Agents of SHIELD/ …
Action, Romance, Marvel, Wolverine, and Deadpool would each have a Collection that could be easily set for a large number of items by the user by dropping them into the designated folder.
