"Allow DTS-HD" Missing from my Roku Express

Server Version#: v1.42.2.10156-f737b826c
Player Version#: 9.0.34.10854-d6855ec86-Plex

Is there a reason the “Allow DTS-HD” setting is not available on my Roku Express?

The Roku Express does support DTS audio output, including DTS Core, when connected via HDMI to a compatible AV receiver. I’m not trying to play DTS-HD MA directly… the goal is simply to allow DTS Core via that “Allow DTS-HD” setting so Plex doesn’t have to transcode the audio, costing my server resources when it shouldn’t have to.

Because this option is missing in the Plex Roku client, DTS audio is always being transcoded to AC3, even though the DTS Core track is already present and supported by the device. This makes the transcode unnecessary and seems to be happening solely because the “Allow DTS-HD” setting isn’t there.

Is there a way I can forcefully make this setting present on the client?

I’d really appreciate some insight about why it might not be possible, or if there is possibly any other solution.

Thank you!

As far as I know that setting only appears if the app detects it is connect to a device that supports DTS.

I have a Roku Premiere and see the same thing. I’ll make a report.

If you set Direct Play to “forced” in settings ( you can access that one during playback as well) it should show as sending the full DTSMA ( as in the server is just giving it without trancoding ) but the Roku will give the the DTS core to the receiver. At least that is what appears to be happening for me.

In any case like I said above I will make a report so it will be investigated by our Roku devs ( can’t make any promises about an ETA for fix )

I do have Direct Play forced, but it still ends up transcoding anyway. One thing I noticed is that in the Roku audio settings, Dolby Digital Plus and DTS-HD MA are listed, but “DTS Digital Surround” is not. On my TCL roku TV, though, DTS Digital Surround is listed, and the Roku Plex app there does give me the option to Allow DTS-HD.

Could that be the problem? Maybe the Roku Plex app is only checking for standard DTS (DTS Digital Surround), instead of recognizing that DTS-HD MA includes a DTS core and exposing the option automatically.

Is there a possibility that there is some way I can forcefully make this setting show up, rather than having the app itself do what it thinks is best?

Possibly. Thanks for gving me info on your TV, it may help devs figure it out.

not that I am aware of. I don’t know if that may change

FWIW on my ROKU premeire Audio mode it set to Auto (DD+ DTS-HD) adn Digital Output format is also set to auto. ( though i’m not sure if my premiere has same capabilities as you Express)

Just FYI. In the ROku audio settings. if you set Digital Output Format to Custom where DTS in that is set to on then the DTS-HD setting should appear in the Plex app Audio setting.

Roku team still looking into why on some devices leaving Roku Digital Output Format settings to Auto does not work for letting the Plex app detect it.
