After having to rebuild my server 3rd time this year (not at fault of plex but my own and upgrading between systems etc). I found dealing with recreating meta data became a real hassle. Import from http link is nice but doesn’t matter much when it caches on pms as its meta file that can’t be reused later on.
with PMS already having necessary permissions to modify media, it wouldn’t be too much of a strech to allow it to store the meta files (and convert existing) along side the media itself in plex friendly format and reasonable file structure.
Keeping it an option would probably the way forward and I believe this implementation would cut down massively on number of folders and files PMS generates just to store its meta data across libraries.
