Allow Watch Together For TV Shows // mod: more than 1 episode at a time

I was struggling with watch together issues, and found this rabbit hole, was considering buying a gpu for transcode and buying lifetime plex but now I’ll pass on it and just continue discord streaming. :frowning: disappointing

Find it bizarre how the staff member in here said it’s not really a feature anyone wants when their forums are absolutely flooded with people requesting it? I guess they don’t realise features don’t get used when they aren’t implemented properly…

We should be able to play an entire season at once, not just 1 episode. Each episode requires having to reinvite everyone to the next episode. Or be able to add an episode to the current session.

All Watch Together needs to be a complete, amazing feature is the ability to play multiple episodes without exiting and the ability to select quality/“play version” per user.

Absolutely agree and want to add my voice to the chorus. This is the only thread on the Plex forums I’m actively monitoring, hoping something comes of it. I use “Watch Together” often (almost always for episodic content), and frequently encounter issues with it – perpetually apologizing to the people I’m inviting is pretty embarrassing and frustrating. It’s a bad look for Plex, and we’ve given up on watching more than one episode at a time at this point.

I hope that @McWanke and other Plex employees will notice the chicken and egg situation here: “Watch Together” is poorly and incompletely implemented now, so it seems quite odd to deprioritrize it because it doesn’t have growing usage. Most users probably try it, encounter issues, and use some other alternative instead. Having a solid “Watch Together” feature would be such an incredible value add.

I have been a Plex fan and evangelist for a long time, and have a Lifetime membership, but I’m exploring alternatives to Plex this month just because Watch Together is such a pain point.

I’m just one user, and I highly doubt my message here will matter. But after following this thread for so long, I figure it’s worth a shot. Thanks for considering.

It’s inevitable that media consumption will become increasingly social. If Plex maintains the attitude that this type of feature doesn’t support this path, I fear Plex will fall behind its competitors who have greater vision and willingness to pave the future of “social media”.

This merits a direct response:

The watch together feature is buried in a submenu. This is terrible discoverability.

This is not the users fault. And blaming users who love this feature and saying it can get development due to lack of adoption is misguided. Promote the feature in a prominent place in the UI! Let me invite a user to watch from the homescreen! Let me pin a user there and start a session, and THEN pick the content together. Add a queue. Make it a binge party. This feature would see massive adoption. But right now, most users just find it simpler to use Discord, or get on a voice chat and say “go” and press play together. This is entirely avoidable, and the Hardwork is done. Promote the feature.

The lack of user adoption here is hugely on the design. That is on the design team, full stop. For TV content the option doesn’t appear until you highlight an individual episode due to this issue and is buried. The same is true for films. Both exist only in a submenu that non-power users or server managers will likely ever open. My extended family will never, ever, spontaneously invite me to watch because they don’t know this feature exists.

Fundamentally the feature is great when it works, but even with two people in the same house in different rooms it is staggeringly difficult to use.

As for overall demand: you are staggeringly wrong in saying it isn’t there. This feature has been so demanded that people to this day lament the loss of the Netflix Watch Together feature that existed on Xbox Live almost a decade ago, and no fewer than 5 separate watch togethet extensions have existed that aim to recreate this for both Plex and Netflix. The Plex Watch Together feature is effectively a hidden secret.

Me and a friend use the watch together on discord all the time. We started using plex’s watch together. Works okay. There is some sync issues where one of us are off by like 5 seconds. It was super annoying that after an episode we had to basically remake the watch together room. After a good amount of googling, I learn that you can play playlists or queue anything. My mind is blown that this isn’t a feature. This has been on discord since the watch together on discord came out. Even though this posting isn’t super long with many people asking for this but it starts over 4 years ago from this posting. Thats how long people have been asking for this feature. I really hope that the development management reconsiders adding this request to your backlog. I guess all we can do for now is keep this request thread alive and keep checking once or twice a year.

As a person coming from Jellyfin, this feature was the best thing ever, being able to sync a tv show easily with friends. But this missing on Plex feels awful. Not being able to watch a whole season in one sitting with my friends easily is something I really miss. I’m glad I switched over to Plex but this is the only feature I really miss.

I saw some people getting it work with playlists so I hope that actually works, still seems like a poor implementation though.

Please implement, it is very tedious doing this for every episode you want to watch together

Throwing my vote in the ring. This would be a super nice addition to Watch Together. The vast majority of us here have paid for Plex Pass, so it’s not like we’re freeloading off of other’s labor.

Please, move this up in the Dev Que.

I’ve never personally used this feature. Although, it does seem like it could be a cool way to share your library with someone else.

My only recommendation, if this were to be implemented, is to have everyone on the Watch Together session confirm before auto starting the next episode. Although it seems nice in theory to not have to interact with the remote, what if someone falls asleep or needs to do something in between episodes? If not a required confirmation to progress, then certainly a notification that someone in watch party has not confirmed they’re still watching and you may be inadvertently proceeding without them.

My friends have resorted to using Discord streaming to watch TV episodes from my Plex together because of the auto play functionality being available for one user as well as being more reliable with syncing than what Watch Together provides. We would definitely use it if it was more stable and could autoplay the next episode or queue multiple things to play.
