Success!! (sort of) A few days ago, I updated to version 1.7.4.4017. I also changed my device transcode setting to “High Quality 30fps”. Now, my recordings are watchable and no corrupt. The downside is of course, the quality is not as good. But the other issue is that it is taking about 2 days for the transcoding to complete! It is not putting a heavy burden on my CPU, it just takes a very long time to complete. Unfortunately I made both changes at the same time so I’m not sure which one “fixed” it. Previously I’d only tried the “highest quality” and “original format” transcode settings.
Where have you those settings? I have hauppauge solohd
The High Quality 30fps is a setting for the HDHR Extend model which can do HW transcoding on the device before sending the stream to Plex.
Can we get some sort of confirmation from even a ninja this issue and threads have been seen? Concerned plex doesn’t even know its a problem… (I know that’s likely insane)

You must be using something other than an HDHomeRun Connect? That’s the device that I have and mine doesn’t give me any transcoding options…I can either turn transcoding on or off…that’s it.
@ispaydeu It had nothing to do with reception. I use a prime which is connected using cable card. I also have a shield and a htpc. Both of which never had issues recording using the prime with 1.7.x of PMS . Only my main server did.
Just chiming in here that I’m also having the same issues on nvidia shield tv with hdhr prime. Recordings and live tv playback is unusable (studdering, lockup, etc).
There is another app on the same box that plays back from the hdhr without issue so I’m assuming it is plex related at this point.

what server version are you on? Wanting to confirm this still happens in .5

Thanks for the quick reply.
I’m on Version 1.7.4.4017
The fact that this is even affecting the shield is concerning…completely platform agnostic issue
I have had the same problem with corrupted recordings and mkv transcoding becomes unusable., downgrading to 1.6.1 reverted things to ts format and no recording issues i have even tried the latest 1.7.5.4035 on synology nas and problem still exists it seems to be with the remuxing that is causing problem I have it set off on plex dvr but sill creates mkv files that are useless 99% of the time. Ts files are fine even recording 6 shows/movies at one time with 2 hdhomrun primes running latest firmware, in can barely get a single recording to work fine under new 1.7.5 release let alone multiple recordings.
I would suggest downgrading to 1.6.1 release which is stable but doesn’t have new live tv support but recordings work fine.
I have downgraded as well for a different reason, was not having any issues with mkv recordings. My issue was Plex not utilizing all of my tuners. I could only get two simultaneous recordings on one of my Connects. If I had a third recording scheduled it would fail even though there were 7 other tuners available, one Prime, a second Connect, and one Dual all sitting idle.
Has there been any word on this being fixed on recent server updates? I’ve been checking the forums and I hadn’t seen anything specifically related to this getting any better. I’m still running server 1.6.x and all is still working great and I think I’m going to stay there until I hear otherwise.

As the person that originally launched this conversation, I can tell you that I am getting great, non-corrupt recordings consistently with the following setup:
- Mac mini running PMS 1.7.5.4035 (Mac OS Sierra 10.2.5 and with energy saver set to not let computer sleep when display is off)
- HDHomeRun Connect with firmware version 20170612beta1
- Both the mini and the hdhr are connected to the same router via ethernet (an RT-AC68U)
- Transcoding is turned ON in DVR device settings (but works fine if OFF too)
- I can schedule shows via IOS app or via web interface, both work fine
I consider this issue completely solved, at least in my configuration.
Thanks for this @ssuess

I’m only on 1.7.4 and it seems some of the DVR bug fixes could address this issue. That said, PMS 1.7.5 doesn’t yet seem to be in the Android app store and I can’t find an apk file to manually install…
- HDHomeRun Connect with firmware version 20170612beta1
I upgraded the firmware on my HDHomeRun Prime to the same firmware you mentioned which helped quite a bit. Thanks for the tip! Not completely solved though.
I want to test PMS 1.7.5 before downgrading to 1.6. Any help with #1 above on Android would be great!
Where are you getting the beta firmware for the HDHR Connect?
I followed the link on their site, but only found beta versions of the
software, not the firmware…
Thanks for the help!
Download the beta updater / installer software and it will push the firmware to the device.
FYI - this issue is now solved for me. It was a combination of a few different things:
- Latest firmware on HDHomeRun (20170612beta1) which resolved most of the studder.
- Switching back to NVIDIA SHIELD internal storage instead of USB 3.0 drive. The USB drive was getting very hot and i noticed the plex TV UI was also lagging. Switching back fixed the UI lag and also Live TV would playback without studder. However, i started running out of space on the internal SHIELD HDD (only 16GB)
- Changing transcoding temp directory to NAS which resolved remaining studder and space issues.
Thanks everyone for the help on this one. I still do not have PMS 1.7.5 but will grab it once the Google Play store is updated.
FYI to everyone: I just noticed they (HDHR) released a new beta software/firmware, so I just updated (to version 20170707beta2)

My problem appears to be due to the forced remuxing from .ts to .mkv container recordings in the new PMS DVR 1.7.x versions. I tried the latest v1.7.5, but I can’t find a way to turn off this forced remux to .mkv containers using my HDHR Primes with the new PMS v1.7.x and to just keep the native .ts stream container the HDHR Prime delivers to Plex. My Primes are updated to the latest HDHR beta Firmware Version 20170612beta1. Until Plex fixes this I’m using PMS v1.6.1 and getting perfect .ts container recordings. I don’t need or want want .mkv container recordings. I want the native .ts container recordings the HDHR Prime’s deliver. Seems like Plex forces everyone to remux/transcode, etc. I believe in keeping it in native container/format and leaving the choice to remux/transcode up to me, the paying customer. I don’t want all my UHD/BRD movies ripped to 480p, so why would I want Plex to decide what I want?
Edit to add: I don’t use Plex PMS for Live viewing or anything else besides the DVR EPG and recording the transport stream my HDHR Prime’s deliver to it. I may have made a mistake investing in PLEX Lifetime to get the DVR function for this, time will tell. PLEX can’t even keep the Gracenote EPG metadata for a DVR recording it makes unless TheTVDB agrees with the Gracenote EPG metadata, but it does record the .ts stream from my HDHR Prime’s and that is all I’m currently using it for.
