Alternative Plex Player/Client?

Version 1.8.2.1192-89432618

The Plex client doesn’t do something very fundamental that I need it to do. Is there another client I can use with the Plex server?

Thanks.

Plex Media Player:

and Plex for Windows/Mac is at the ‘Devices/Apps’ link below.

Use either, or both.
PMP has enhanced features - set while in TV View - use in any view after that.

you might want to explain what fundamental thing you need it to do, to better help you…

Apparently, Plex won’t/can’t use an MKV vidoe’s default language/subtitles settings. I asked and was told no. I need a player that does this because 95% of what I watch is anime that is set to play Japanese language and English subtitles. The Plex player uses English language, no subtitles as default, and I have to change it every time a new episode loads. That makes it practically useless for me.

I got it to work with VLC, although in a very strip down sort of way (no nifty art, etc), and I’m trying this new Plex Player (suggested above), but I haven’t got very far with it.

you can change your default subtitle settings @ https://app.plex.tv/desktop#!/settings/account

if your files audio and subtitles are marked with the correct language info (and not just unknown), then plex should automatically select your desired subs/audios from any available internal/external subs that plex can see.

you can easily browse and check within @ Plex Web what subs/audio are available to each video.

I don’t have much anime, which have their own subtitle/audio issues, beyond regular media, but here is an example via plexweb.

you might also check out @ [REL] Sub-Zero 2.6.5.3223 - Subtitles done right which can download subtitles from a wider range of subtitle providers, that what is available via plex itself.

Thanks for all that. My first issue, though, is that I want my default/preferred audio language to be English because i watch more than just anime. And, also, I don’t know which of the language options is Japanese:

The language/subtitle settings in my MKV files are all properly set. I’ve taken the time and effort to make sure all of my MKV files are setup correctly. This works just fine with every single video player I’ve ever tried before.

Thanks again.

I don’t know which is japanese is either.

edit

set your preferred sub/audio as english (unless you are wanting a foreign audio by default), then change the subtitle auto select option to your preference.

if you don’t know what language, you might get a clue from the available audio, then try to match up with the subtitles.

hopefully, someone else who is better versed in anime or foreign language audio/subtitles will have some other suggestions.

日本語 is japanese

OMG thank you.

Sadly, all of that doesn’t work. I still have videos loading up with English language and no subtitles even though the MKVs are set to do so by default. This is very sad and annoying. How can such a basic thing not be possible with the Plex client? This renders the Plex client pretty much useless for me. I’ll have to use VLC, which is not ideal.

Curious; the other clients that automatically play the anime with Japanese audio and English subs - do you use themm for anything else?

As above, you can set your default audio to be Japanese for Plex, as long as you’re god with that being the default for all videos.

i don’t know of any client (including VLC, WMP Classic, etc.) that allows you to set a default audio for anime that is different for other videos if your other clients work, my guess id if you played a non-anime video they’d default to Japanese audio as well.

Depending on which track in the MKV is set as primary, though, there are some ways to ensure that track is played. It might require you to change the primary track setting for your MKVs. In mine, I usually remove all but the one language I want (normally English,) but for some - such as anime - the Engliah track is inferior so I set the native track as primary and the secondary track as English in case I want to switch to it.

Plex, and basically any other media player/client, can be set to play the default track by…default, or choose a specific language (if available and marked correctly) by default.

Recommend you try MKVToolnix (the GUI setup.) Vey simple, load the MKV and either delete the tracks you don’t want, or set the one you want as default/primary. You can also easily set the language marking for any track so its both correctly read by the player, and readable by you when choosing the track in the player.

you could create an all Japanese anime library, with the default language set according to your preference (en/jp).

no need to go through remuxing work
