Many of us purchased nvidia shield devices in order to run Plex on them and enjoy uncompressed audio (Dolby TrueHD, etc.). Unfortunately, on a large and ever-growing number of (seamlessly-branched) blu-rays, we are experiencing sound playback issues as documented here.
Having traced the problem to the embedded exoplayer from google, and having brought the issue to the exoplayer team’s attention, they have refused to address the issue despite other players having already done so. They blame the MKV container specs (without evidence).
I hope Plex will begin to consider offering an alternative embedded player as a primary fully-supported player (ie., not the “old player” that won’t play Dolby Vision, etc.). At least one of Plex’s competitors offers VLC in addition to exoplayer as embedded player option.
Failing that, I hope Plex will engage with the exoplayer team to either fix the issue directly or at least document where the mkv container spec is (allegedly) non-spec-compliant so that it can be fixed.
This issue with Dolby TrueHD Atmos playback has been stagnant for far too long. Sadly, I don’t find my lifetime plexpass worthwhile any longer and I am actively looking for alternatives (alas, I can’t speak with my wallet!). But I greatly prefer Plex for many reasons and would very much like to see this issue resolved so that I can continue to use it.
Best Regards,
H
