I’ve been using my Plex server with Amazon Alexa for years and it’s always worked well. However starting about 3 months ago, it’s completely stopped working. I ask Alexa to play something from Plex and she responds by telling me she’s playing exactly what I asked for from my server. However nothing ever plays. My server never shows any connection. I don’t get any errors what-so-ever… it just doesn’t play anything.
I have a dozen or so Amazon Echo devices and they all behave the same. They all state they’re playing, but nothing works. Everything else in my Plex ecosystem works just fine. I’m able to connect remotely via the Plex App on my iPhone, PlexAmp in CarPlay works, my Sonos devices can play from Plex with no issue at all. It’s just constrained to Alexa!
I’ve tried disabling and re-enabling the skill multiple times. Every time I connect it, it links up just perfectly with no errors. However the same problem exists… I ask her to play something, she says she’s playing it, but nothing.
Any suggestions or things to check? Looking through the logs, I can see the request come in, it looks like it’s streaming the correct content, but I never see an actual connection on the server.
As an example, I just asked “Alexa, ask Plex to play music from Skid Row” (Don’t judge me!). She responds “Playing music by Skid Row” but then nothing. Here’s the snippet from the server log file:
