No sound on Alexa WITH LOGS

I know this issue has been banging around on the forums for literally years.

But the bug is still there - is there a fix? Workaround? Anyone working on the issue?

My Alexa was fine yesterday, today I just get silence. It’s not the only alexa device I have issues with some have never worked.

I can use the command “alexa ask plex to play full moon fever” and it will respond with “Playing full moon fever by Tom Petty” but then silence. So it’s communicating with Plex but something breaks after that.

Using 1.24.1.4931 hosted on my Ubuntu server.

Just to add to the confusion it works on some alexa devices, but not others - all on the same network.

Use the Alexa app to delete the Plex skill. Then power cycle all of the Echos and reboot the server. Then re-enable the Plex skill via the Alexa app. For me, that process resolves, most of the time, the “finickiness” that I run into in my Alexa/Plex topology. Good luck!

Edit: I am assuming your server is running the latest Plex Media Server.

I found that 1st gen Echo ans Amazon Tap had the problem, but 2nd and 3rd gen Echo Dots played OK. See the other new topic started for this.

Adding my frustration with silence here as well. I have two 2nd generation Echo’s running as a stereo pair with an Echo Sub. Always worked perfectly to have Alexa play music from PLEX from Windows 10 media server. For a long time now, Alexa recognizes the PC/Server, the song/album/artist titles, library radio, etc., it says it is now playing… then nothing ever happens, just silence. So frustrating. Doesn’t work at all. Used to work so great. Now I have two bookends and zero sound from my PLEX library going through the Echo devices. Talk to Alexa who responds perfectly, then… nothing. What changed? It is a PLEX pass feature now? An API issue? I don’t know where to turn. I’m going through the community threads and it appears I’m not alone. 10.22.2021

I’ve tried the delete, reinstall skill and reboot. Worked once, but not again.

As towerpower points out, Alexa must be connecting to the plex server in order for the song/album search to work. Seems to be there is a bug in the streaming code.

Surprised plex don’t fix it, there is no way I would pay for software/plex pass if I know it’s buggy and they don’t fix issues in a timely manner.

Maybe if we can collate the info collected for the devs it’ll help resolve it faster. Can you guys report your generation echo devices?

We mostly have 3rd gen with one 1st gen.

They are all on the same account and the problem affects the 1st gen and one of the 3rd gen.

If the devs could tell me which are the correct logs and where they are located, I will a) post them here and b) take a look myself.

So, updated the image to

Then tried to play a playlist. The Skill finds the playlist, displays the image but then after a few seconds ends. No sound. I can’t see anything obvious in the logs and they are set to DEBUG.

After this the logs so nothing - just the standard background chatter. No transcode or anything like you see when using one of the Echo devices that work (same account, same network)

So devs, any ideas? Is there another log I should be looking at? Had a poke in some of the other but nothing interesting that I could see (i.e. no errors)

I have finally found a work around for not playing sound on Alex - Plex

logon to plex on the web -

  1. www.plex.tv
  2. Settings
  3. Authorised Devices
  4. Click ‘X’ to Remove ‘Amazon Alexa’
  5. Ask Alexa to play your music
  6. Alex will confirm plex no longer linked
  7. Re-Link Plex through the Alexa app.

I’ve been trying for months to fix this and this finally works

Hooray! It appears to be Amazon’s fix; not only Plex, but WJST Jet Set Radio and Kansas Public Radio (KPR) skills are working again as well.

The Amazon Tap still doesn’t yet play with any of those skills.
