Amazon Fire TV, does subtitles work without transcode?

I search for a new Playback Device, because on PS4 Subtitles always force transcoding on MKV Files.

Can the Fire TV Stick and Plex do this without transcoding ?

Plex Android & Android TV clients, including the Amazon Fire Stick, direct play PGS, VOBSUB, and SRT subtitles, including when the video or audio is transcoding.

Enabling ASS subtitles currently results in a video transcode.

However, Plex is adding support for ASS subtitles. There is a preview build (pre-beta) available for testing (Nvidia SHIELD/Android app SSA/ASS format anime subtitles + transcoding problems).

Ok thanks.

So i buy one of these Android based or Amazon Fire Stick.

Roku OS do the same ? Direct Play with PGS, VOBSUB and SRT ?

On PS4 the Subtitle support is horrible, only MP4 / H264 / AAC with SRT.

Others can help with Roku specifics. I know many people like them, but I’ve no direct experience with them.

If you get a FireStick, go with the 4K Max (2021) or 4K (2018), even if you have no 4K media. I have both and they both work well with Plex. I’ve had problems with older, less capable FireSticks.

The Max is the latest FireStick and has a faster processor, updated WiFi, etc. Specifications: FireTV Device Specifications.

The FireTV Cube 2nd gen should also work well.

Big thanks for the advice

I have searched a bit and Roku have no support for Image based Subtitles, so the Plex Video also Transcodes.

So i get one of these Fire Sticks 4K

If you use subtitles, I’d stay away from Roku. Plus switching between audio tracks on Fire TV is instantaneous now.
The only downside is that it doesn’t have support for ASS on Plex yet.
