Server Version#: 1.40.4.8626
Player Version#: 4.132.2
After upgrading to the latest beta version, hardware transcoding fails with both AMD GPUs in my server, an RX 7800 XT discrete graphics card and integrated Ryzen 7900X iGPU. Both devices worked previously for hardware transcoding with Plex.
The two GPUs are still visible under Settings/Transcoder/Hardware transcoding device, however no matter what transcoder settings I select, and I tried just about every combination possible, it refuses to transcode and results in an error.
After downgrading to the last public release of PMS (version: 1.40.3.8555), the problem was resolved and the server was once again able to use hardware transcoding with both devices. I attempted to upgrade back to the beta version again to verify it was the culprit, and the problem returned. After downgrading a second time, the problem was once again resolved.
I am seeing a similar issue with my Nvidia 1650 Super. Transcoding causes the selected movies or show to just hang there loading (spinning wheel). It was working fine before the upgrade. I will revert back and confirm the latest Stable restores when I get back tonight.
Things like this can only be diagnosed with log files.
- activate debug logging (not āverboseā logging!)
- quit Plex Server
- wait 1 minute
- start Plex Server
- wait 2 minutes
- (try to) Play a movie which requires transcoding
- wait 3 minutes
- fetch log files and attach them here
Alright. I followed the directions you provided and attached the log files as requested. Hope it helps.

Thank you for the logs!
You can remove them now, if you want.
I have filed this as an issue in the internal bug tracker.
Unrelated tip: you should remove the .bundle folders of all those defunct content plugins in C:\Users\owner\AppData\Local\Plex Media Server\Plug-ins\
iām on 1.40.4.8626 and also running into what possibly may be the same issue also. iām getting a āconversion failed. the transcoder exited due to an errorā. will try to go back to the last stable version.
oh⦠and did a log file⦠will try to attach itā¦
Does this build resolve the issue?
Unfortunately itās still crashing, with the same error as the most recent beta version. Build 1.40.3.8555 still appears to be working properly however.
@quantumcipher can you provide the logs from the latest version?
Well this is odd⦠It seems to be working fine now, after reinstalling the build you provided, after I had reverted back to the old version again after the first test. Iām not sure if it was something I did wrong or a random bug, but whateverās different in 1.40.5.8665 seems to have fixed the problem now. Iāll attach logs again in case you still need them.
