“An error has occurred. Please try again later”

Server Version#: 1.20.3.3483
Player Version#: 8.8.0.21200(c37f7b87)
Client: Nvidia Shield
Tuner Make/Model: HDHomeRun Quatro

Hi, again

I’m getting the error: “An error has occurred. Please try again later” when trying to record a show in my Nvidia Shield and my Galaxy S8 plus phone. Is this a known issue at the moment? If I connect to the webapp, I can set shows to record just fine.

I’ve already cleared out the PMS data and cache as well as wiped my shield, but the issue still occurs. I realize I didn’t need to do this, since it’s happening on my phone as well, but I did it anyway.

Any ideas?

Any ideas?

I have two physical hard drives on my server. One is called TV (for TV shows I have saved to watch again later) and the other is called LiveTV. When I select TV, I can record from the guide. When I select LiveTV, I get the error in the title.

The permissions on both drives are the same. The only difference is, LiveTV is shared, but it is shared with the same people in the security tab. 1 group and 1 user. Both with full permissions.

I feel like I’m missing something simple.

I am able to setup a recording through the guide on a Windows client installation, so this seems to be an Android issue.

Hi there. Any ideas? Log is attached.

You followed the guidelines for reporting problems pretty well yet all of Plex has ignored you. For what it is worth I applaud you.

Unfortunately I do not use Plex for recording and I am unfamiliar with that part of Plex’s operation.

Also for what it is worth I apologize for everyone ignoring you.

If this experience has soured you on Plex you might want to give Emby a try. In the Emby forums you would not face the total indifference you are facing here. Of course Emby might have the same kind of problem and they might not be able to provide a fix but you would not be ignored and there would be attempts to find and fix, if possible, your problem.

Emby is different from Plex in a lot of ways in some ways they are better and in others they are not but in the area of customer service they are a LOT better.

You can install and try Emby without damaging your Plex install but I do not recomend running them at the same time on the same machine. For the duration of your trial period yo can turn off Plex’s auto startup and simply use Emby in its place.

I run Emby on one machine and Plex on another. Both systems can look at and use network shares for media storage and they can use exactly the same paths etc. for media.

Whatever you choose, good luck.

Hey, Elijah

I appreciate your response and time!

I used Emby many years ago when they were free, but decided to lean into and pay for Plex since they were more mature of a server, so to speak, at the time. Since I ditched WMC recently and went to the Shield full time, and since this is the only issue I’m having, I want to make Plex work. But I may install Emby on a test server and see how it goes. As long as Android TV has a fully functional Emby app, maybe it will work for me.

Also, I wonder if the support is lacking for Plex due to Covid, or if it’s always been like this. I don’t feel its always been like this, but I haven’t been here too much.

Thanks again!

Plex’s lack of support is one of the primary reasons I do most of my streaming with Emby now.

Plex is more flashy but I really would not say “more mature.”

Plex has added a bunch of fluff but little in the way of functionality in the last few years.

Emby’s Android app is quite functional but, like just about everything else Android, a little clumsy to use for streaming. I find my Rokus better for both Plex and Emby. I only use my Shield or my Fire 4K stick when I get forced into it.

As you have probably guessed, since I run both Plex and Emby, I do not much like to place all my eggs in one basket. I like the idea that I can fairly easily move from one server to the other without any real trouble.

With both Emby and Plex I have bought a lifetime license. The reason has nothing to do with functionality but rather I believe that quality developers should be supported but, being on a moderately low fixed income, I cannot afford recurring charges.

Also Emby, like Plex, is quite free for most functionality.

For me Plex and Emby both work fine. It is the superior support that causes me to use Emby a lot more than Plex.

Hello? Plex support?

You want that which does not exist?
Plex “support” is an oxymoron.

Try using older player version, to see if it records. 8.6.0.20351 is pretty solid. Disable New video player, and allow audio passthrough in the app settings. Waiting for Plex to fix something can literally take years.
This version of player has solved 99% of the playback problems for me, and alsi records just fine.

I tried all of that except reverting back to 8.6.0.20351. I’ll look into that unless it is a very very old version. Not sure what version we’re at now. This happens multiple Android phones as well, not just the Shield.

Thanks,

Here’s what worked for me to eliminate “An error has occurred. Please try again later”… and get my Guide back;

Go to Settings > Live TV / DVR > DELETE DVR

Unfortunately the Tuner, TV stations and recordings had to be set up again after deleting the DVR, but hey, it worked.
