"An error occurred loading this content" after AppleTV wakes from sleep

I've been using PlexConnect for several weeks now, and it's working pretty well! However, I've noticed that fairly often I'll wake up my Apple TV and it won't play anything, giving me "An error occurred loading this content. Try again later."

Restarting Plex, PlexConnect, or my Mac doesn't fix it, but restarting my Apple TV fixes it every time.

I haven't confirmed it completely, but it seems that whenever I have a show paused and my Apple TV times out and goes to sleep, when I wake it up I can't play anything until I restart my Apple TV. I don't think I've seen it when my Apple TV sleeps without a show a paused, but I'm not positive.

Not sure if this is a bug with PlexConnect or with the Apple TV, but if anyone has any info or suggestions I can try to debug I'd appreciate it!

Question... during the "sleeping time" of your aTV, do you restart PlexConnect or reboot its host system?

I ve the same problem too. But I found that another way to get around is to use your other devices like mobile plex to excess your plex content on PMS, and get back too ATV and it will also work again.

Good info and it may help find root cause.

I have my ATV's sleep all the time though and never have this problem, i wonder if it is specific to some network setups.

The ATV is designed to be very low powered, another workaround it to not have it sleep as ti really will not use a lot of power.

http://www.anandtech.com/show/6834/apple-tv-2013-a1469-short-review-analysis-of-a-new-a5

Assuming an idle power draw of 0.7W and an electricity rate of $0.11/kWh...

0.7W = 0.0007kW * 8,760 h/yr = 6.1 kWh/yr

$0.11/kWh * 6.1 kWh/yr = $0.67/yr

I've noticed a few things. If I don't let my AppleTV sleep ever, I never have an issue, even if I leave "Trailers" open on the AppleTV, or leave a show paused for hours. If I let my AppleTV sleep, it doesn't seem to matter if a show is paused, "Trailers" is open, etc. If I use Plex (Trailers) once, then it will error once I wake it from sleep.

I've found that if I restart the AppleTV (and nothing else), or sometimes just load up other content (anything not on Plex) on the AppleTV after waking from sleep, then I can play Plex videos again.

No, PlexConnect is running on my Mac-Pro, which stays running the whole time, so PlexConnect is never restarted while the AppleTV is sleeping. I've tried restarting PlexConnect on the Mac-Pro (or restarting the entire Mac-Pro) once I wake the AppleTV, but doesn't fix the problem.

Will give this a try and see if that works!

Hmm, I wonder. My AppleTV is connected via wireless to my AEBS. Is yours perhaps hooked up via ethernet?

I cannot replicate this problem and yes i use ethernet (my ATV sleeps and resumes at least 10 times a day).

Try it on ethernet as i would be interested to see if it makes a difference for you.

Just bear in mind this being squashed as a bug is not particularly high on the agenda given the cost savings outlines earlier in this thread.

I have this exact same problem, we always had it with plexconnect but we use LAN connected right into the router.

As soon as the ATV3 goes to sleep sometimes it still works and sometimes it either comes up with the real trailers app or Trailers is currently unavailable.

Then when I restart the ATV3, it suddenly starts working correct again.

Been trying to analyze this for ages but havent found any solution :(

The strangest thing is that when it does happen i dont even see a request coming in to plexconnect from the ATV as if it doesnt connect to it anymore, except when you reboot it it all works.

Have you tried to reset aTV's DNS setting to manual instead of rebooting?

From this (original trailers app) it really sounds like the aTV is connecting to your ISPs DNS, without caring about PlexConnect's DNS...

Yes tried that as well, same result :frowning:

Same result as what? Rebooting the aTV?
