According to ATV specs http://www.apple.com/appletv/specs/ the ATV cannot play AVI with MPEG4, it can only play AVI with M-JPEG. To be absolutely sure that no transcoding is taking place you can set Transcode=DirectPlay when playing those AVI's, and probably the error message will be displayed at the beggining of the video.

I'm thinking i'll change transcoderaction = Transcode in ATVSettings.cfg to force transcoding on all of my files and see how that goes for the week.

Ok, I tried force transcoding but still got the same issue. I will try the atv 6.2 firmware update see if that resolves anything.

Reading above posts it looks like the issue is related with transcoding. Can you pls test transcoderaction=DirectPlay ? Most videos (notably mkv ones) will not play at all, but the ones that will play (MP4's and some AVI's) probably will not give the error message towards the end of the show.

Another 35 times this has happened to me. I've made a bit of progress isolating the problem.
Tried disabling Dolby Digital as per original post but that didn't make a difference for me.
I've replaced my router and hard wired my aTV
Did a factory reset on my aTV, reloaded certificate and downloaded a fresh version of PlexConnect fron github
Formatted PC and installed PMS
It pretty much always happens on h.263 xvid files, so i'm still leaning towards it being a PMS Transcoding issue as moody_blue has suggested.

I'm also going crazy with this... I have a few observations to share.
Before I update my atv 3 to 6.1.1 (I'm stupid ) I did not have this problem.
I have tons of avi,mp4,mkv and there is no pattern on the error, it happens to all.
This is the most interesting thing... When the video stops before the end with the error, I reload the video, fast forward to near the end and let it play, normally , no errors... I have no idea why...
My guess is the fix is in understanding what changed on the update to 6.1.1 since there was no problem before that update...

Fresh install of PMS and Plexconnect on whitebox fileserver from 3 days ago (unsure of versions at the moment as I am at work). Client is ATV3 with latest iOS version.
May have to go back to XBMC for a while as its starting to drive the missus crazy.

Well I’ve had enough of this issue. It also started happening when using the Paid plex app on the iPad Air-playing to the Apple TV. I went out and bought a wdtv Live and no more issues.
Dropping a very BETA - meaning quite untested - application.js.
It adds "pings" to keep the transcoder awake... up to now the transcoder tended to close down prematurely. Early testing showed, that it MIGHT affect the early ending of TVShows as well, though I have absolutely no idea how those things are correlated (as all segments were cached by aTV already).
Anyways, I am gone for the week with no time to conduct a proper test - so grab the code and check it yourself!
