I am having same error from a long time, I also tried enabling ā€œAllow insecure connectionsā€ but it was of no use.
So, I contacted WD for this, this is what they have to say:

Thank you for contacting Western Digital Customer Service and Support. My name is Ashar

As per the email received, I understand that you are upset with the poor update cycle of plex server in my cloud home. I apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused to you.

Please be informed that Plex is a third-party application and I request you to contact Plex community forum for any issue relate to the update

I am unable to stream videos using my plex media server setup on WD MyCloud Home device. This problem only impacts the android phone or tv apps while all my plex videos play perfectly FINE on my Apple and Windows devices.

I am getting the error message: ā€œAn error occurred while attempting to play this video. Please check your connection and try again.ā€

The problem started a few months ago; right after plex released a software update and updated the server.

I had been patiently hoping all this time that the Plex Technical team would identify such a major issue and rectify it without the need for filing a complaint. Unfortunately, the issues persist to this day.

Hence, I request the Plex technical team to kindly resolve the issue asap.

The issue is with WD, they are not providing Plex updates to My Cloud Home devices. It was last updated on Feb 2020.
This is such a shame, both parties are juggling us in this matter.
I think we should move to Jellyfin and also change our NAS too

We are still investigating this issue. So far I have not been able to reproduce the problem with the WD MyCloud device. Yes, it is still running 1.18.6, and I am still able to connect and stream from it.

If anyone is willing to share a library from their MyCloud device with me, that would be helpful.

Hi I’m not sure if this helps but I’m running pms on Nvidia shield and client apps on a variety of platforms my Android apps been down for a week and finally managed to sort the issue. My client apps had updated automatically but PMS had not it seems my issue was caused by no back compatibility with the new client app and the pms being slighter older. Not really a fix but hopefully worth mentioning. I also got the apps to work with the older pms version by rolling them back to older versions. Thanks

after a long struggle, I disabled sure connections and it worked am using my cloud home but after this drama(1 month of no plex) am so getting a Synology.i hope this helps other people

What version of PMS were you running on the Shield? The Android client does require PMS 1.18. If you were running what comes included with that Shield, that would be too old.

Hi it was 1.19.1.2360, I’m not sure how old that version is but when the apps updated it started throwing that error. Thanks ray

I have the same problem with android devices but after I disabled secure connection it worked fine, I can share with you my My Cloud Home to in investigate this issue … just send me your email …

logging.txt (2.4 MB)
Plex Media Server.log (2.3 MB)
Here are my logs. Can’t play content on my Android TV, but can on Apple devices and from the web player. Server is on a WD MyCloud Home running 1.18.6.2350.

When disabling Secure Connections on the server, I can play content.

Just wanted to mention I too had this error and it was fixed by manually updating Plex media server (not Plex app) from the Google play store on my nvdia shield device.

Solved the error on the Android app (via web it worked fine), by updating the Plex media server on my QNAP from 1.21.1 to 1.23.3

Can someone please confirm (or deny) that there is no way to manually update PMS on My Cloud Home? For now the ā€˜disable secure connections’ is working for me, but for how long?

Well I caved in and was tired of waiting for a fix. I took an old laptop I had and installed the Plex Server on it. Still running my WD 16TB drive via USB on it. No issues connecting securely. The issue is not being able to update whatever device you are using to the most current Plex software version. Until they fix it, it will always be insecure and finicky.

Now I have a $400 Netgear router that was made to run plex just doing basic B**** routing and wifi stuff lol. Good luck to everyone.

I was experiencing the error message on Fire TV 4k, Newer Chromecast, and the Android app on my phone. Roku, Web, and iOS worked without any issues.

Setting - Always - Allow insecure connections allowed the Android devices to work correctly.

Upgrading PMS from version 1.23.3.4707 to 1.23.4.4775 resolved the issue and I was able to set Allow insecure connections back to Never.

Happy to provide logs and do testing to help identify the issue.

Same problem with Nvidia Shield. Running Windows Server Version 1.21.1.3766.
The server is also reporting that it is not visible outside:

Not available outside your network

Your server is signed in to Plex, but is not reachable from outside your network

But, clearly it is.

Disabling security worked, but not a viable solution.

How do you do this?

There is definitely no way to manually update PMS on WD MyCloud Home. The only way to temporarily fix this is by disabling secure connection.
