Android Version of Plex connecting to server but not playing media files?

The last 36hrs Plex android version of the app is not playing media (movies/videos) even after connecting to private server (source). Any idea on why the android version is busted? The ios version and the samsung tv app work just fine as always

Try going back after a few seconds and try a second or third time to start the playback.
Does this work eventually?

I am seeing the same issue.
Pick a movie to play and you just get the spinner and playback will not start.

yes, If I back out and try again a couple of times, the movie will play just fine.

fwiw, this is on a shield running v8.20.0.26521

So I guess this a known issue.

But from a users perspective it is quite disappointing, as it just appears broken.

Server: 1.23.3.4707

FireTV 4K Stick: 8.19.2.26377
Android Mobile: 8.18.2.25850
All Video Files Hit by The Planet Blower Upper Gun.
I am able to play music with both of the above.

I haven’t been able to play any video file, from any position, no matter how many times I try - they never start and finish when Plex gives up and throws the old familiar error, suggesting I check the connection and try again.

Browsing - unaffected.

Roku, Plexweb, PfW, HTPC - All is well.

This just in:
Updated the Android Mobile: 8.19.2.26377
No change.

Eyewitness News Special Report:
Restarted the server - Androids came back to life.

Same here. I’ve tried everything. Maybe they can rectify this in their maintainable plan today?
I’m not going to pay a sub without getting a proper solution for this

@glennallsop_hotmail_com and @blim5001
can you confirm that this issue only affects files with AC3 audio?

The media info for the files that I had it happen with show the audio as:

Codec EAC3
Channels 6
Language English
Audio Channel Layout 5.1(side)

Ive tried everything and there is nothing to do imo except to wait for Plex to get it sorted out. The ios app version and pc app and web version all work fine. Its only droid versions that have the problem and of course plex support is impossible to reach

Would you be able to fetch some log for me after replicating the issue? The more logs would be helpful. Steps on gathering logs are available here; https://support.plex.tv/articles/201573117-android-android-tv-fire-tv-logs/

Can you try disabling Secure connections?

If it’s the same issue that I have been able to replicate locally, it’s down to a bad SSL certificate in Plex Media Server. If you could update your server to the latest available, the issue should be resolved.

Here’s a link to the latest Plex Media Server announcement; Plex Media Server - #442 by janoskk

How is that going to fix Android only? If it’s a bad SSL, the problem would occur on ios systems too correct? It does not

Yes, I will get you the logs today…

Android is currently super strict on the way it handles SSL, it always uses a fresh copy of the SSL on the request, other clients (and non-Android playback requests) cache the certificate from previous requests allowing new requests to use the previous certificate. This is why you can browse your server correctly but you can’t playback anything.

Good to know. I currently have a WD my cloud home and thinking of upgrading to u Synology NAS. Regarding upgrading the plexi media server, Wouldn’t I have to upgrade the media server on the WD my home cloud or no? Or just the media server on my PC?

If you get the same behaviour from both servers, you would need to update them both, if not just the server that is having problems.

Thanks man. I’m not a big fan of these WD Nas devices because they seem to be in charge of Plex’s updates and I’ve heard that you can’t update them manually as easy as other Nas devices. But I’ll give it a go later this evening. Thanks for the help. I’ll also send those logs also

However, I only get that behavior on fire stick app. Playing videos on my PC through the Plex app is no problem so it makes me wonder it’s plex configuration within the WD drive

Your PC doesn’t use Android. The FireTV does.

The Problem:
I’m NOT updating to a Beta Build to fix my FireTV.

I will, reluctantly, continue to reboot the server as required to keep my FireTV in play for the next two days - as a Tropical Storm requires the best radar app I have - and that one lives on my FireTV.

After that I’ll just go back to the Roku - on that app I can disable The Blurred Nightmare that has infected my FireTV - and I can’t seem to be able to get rid of.
