An error occurred while attempting to play this video. Please try restarting both the Plex Media Server and this app

@sophware I totally agree, I’m just awaiting the update, it’s gone on to long now! But patience is needed even with the current situation…
I just did it as a test really, I’m not comfortable either with the secure connections being disabled, but it found where it was possibly occurring?

Dave

Just to confirm that I am expirencing the same issue:

every plex update it enables the new player

if I try to use it, then it says restart everything.

If i switch to old player it works fine without issues.

There is a work around for this issue - DNS - Rebind issue - Plex has acknowledged this issue and is suppose to fix.

I have this issue with the Android App on my Lenovo Tablet. Not really cool with disabling the secure connection, that’s not a solution in my opinion.

Solved this problem on all movie that got this error by choose settings>advanced >passthrough (Optical) Optical Encodings (AC3) on mi box s.

Sometimes the same user facing message can have multiple causes under the hood. We’re doing our best to identify different issues and resolve them

This might have fixed it for me as well, thank you! Just bumped mine from 3mbps to 4mbps.

Edit: To clarify, I think the issue my Fire user was having was they were trying to play content (720p x264) that had a rate of around 3.5-4.0 mbps, and server limit was 3mbps.

Same error here

Seems like disabling the new player on firestick and increasing the bandwidth to 3mb for remote streaming worked for me… I would prefer to keep it lower then 3mb but testing that is what worked…

How can this still be an issue? It isn’t helped by the fact that the client keeps changing settings during updates. If you’re going to change settings then at least make sure those settings work. I just got another call, probably the 10th total, from my parents asking about this error that I’ve had to walk them through over and over again. It is mind numbingly ridiculous. Fix your software.

Can anyone re-upload PlexForAndroid-8.1.0.17362-1ddb3df9-Armv7aGooglePlayStdExo.apk ?

8.1 is now in public beta

I also disabled the h264 maximum level under account settings, advanced and all videos that previously gave me that message no longer do. Thanks for your feedback here, glennworth.

It seems this error has multiple causes, but I can back up one of them is SSL for sure. I had my local server to secure only, and I have my own cert installed from Let’s Encrypt and it resolves to my internal DNS at the house. Worked fine on Web and with the “old” player, but not the new player. I disabled secure for now and it made the new player start working

Good news, ty!

I have no idea what you guys at Plex are doing, but the Android app is an absolute mess.

The app stopped working 2 weeks ago, then started working again without any changes to the app version.

Now, it’s stopped working again on both NVIDIA Shield and Pixel 4XL. Version 8.0.2.17816. Same server works perfectly find on iOS, Web and PC.

Doesn’t matter if I use the new or old player- and tweaking quality settings doesn’t fix the issue.

It’s also not a DNS issue because I experience the problem on Wifi and on 4G connected to my mobile carrier.

My setup uses a remote server utilising LetsEncrypt certs.

I have no idea what you guys are doing but bloody hell test your apps first before releasing.

Also FYI 8.1. Beta doesn’t fix the problem.

7.3 works perfectly fine. So whatever messing around you did after 7.3 has stuffed the app.

These sorts of issues should NOT be in stable channel releases. I have 4 TVs and multiple mobiles running Plex I don’t have time to be constantly swapping between apps, tweaking settings on all of them to be able to watch content.

I run the beta versions and haven’t seen this, ever.

Try uninstalling the app and then installing again.

It only works for me if I put “Always” in “Embed Subtitles”

The issue occurs in the beta channel also. Even , the latest 8.1

Any Android app after 7.3 will not allow me to play content on my remote server running behind a reverse proxy with Let’s Encrypt certs.

I have a feeling this is the issue.

If you’re running a local server, or running a server not behind a reverse proxy or your own SSL certs, you probably won’t have an issue.

I’ve had to revert all clients to 7.3, stop auto updates on all my Android devices, and have told all my family to do the same- just so we can continue to use Plex.

As I said- there’s nothing wrong with my server, as there’s no issues playing content on iOS or Web. Only Android after version 7.3.
