An error occurred while attempting to play this video. Please try restarting both the Plex Media Server and this app

I had this same problem on 8.1.0.17967 until I generated a custom certificate for plex to use. However, I CAN’T use this custom cert for the plex web interface (set up a reverseproxy with apache2) as the local web interface still seems to be redirecting to plex’s servers and tries to use the plex-generated certificate. This whole plex proxy and automatic certificate thing is such a cluster, why is it so hard to self-host what’s supposed to be a self-hosted service.

I have a reverse proxy setup for radarr, sonarr, emby, tautulli, ombi etc pretty much everything except Plex. I don’t like forwarding ports but it’s hard to use a reverse proxy and also use Plex without getting errors in the remote connection settings among other things. If they would add a spot to include the reverse proxy address that would be great.

Plex and reverse proxy works fine with Gooby:

I will check that out, thank you!

Definitely the player! If I can open any number of random video files using VLC as the player on my phone through Plex then their own player has issues. I just updated the app on my Android phone today and it still didn’t help. When I went back and enabled it to use VLC as the player. Everything played fine.
Now to see if I can get my FireStick to use the old player and not just stop and sort of freeze in the middle of playing a video any video.

the problem is solved for me on the MiBox after the 8.1 update

Will this ever get fixed? The Android/firestick apps are useless to me without this working.

8.1 upgrade and still consistently (as in 100%) can not play DVR programs on any Android device. Others are hit or miss. How is this still going on? How many new users are immediately turned off because of this issue?

Can you provide a sample file and logs from client and server, please?

I will try to provide this. As sample file, do you mean the played media file? It happens with every single file/codec on my end, no matter if direct playing or transcoding.

Here’s how to provide a sample file:

And create logs of the issue on the client:

I finally resolved this issue with the new player.

The player (nothing useful on server logs) gave me useful logs:

[FFmpeg] [ERROR] [tls @ 0xe7810640] The certificate's owner does not match hostname mydomain.com
[FFmpeg] [ERROR] [DemuxerPipeline] Failed to open cache.

I resolved it by closing my 32400 port, and running plex through my ngnix proxy with valid certificate from my domain.

Edit: I quickly undid this again, as it cause images to load much slower, and preview thumbnails did not load at all.
So, now I fixed it by reopening the port and settings “Custom server access URLs” to my IP (no domain with cert).
You can probably leave this field blank, but I will leave my IP for now. This is however the reason for this error a lot of people are having.

I could obviously also use my lets encrypt certs, but why bother if it’s only used over plex.tv.

I feel like we’ve lost the thread of the original problem here, with people reporting all kinds of new things (reverse proxies, custom certs, etc.).

I’m running the Shield TV, i.e. using the Android TV Plex app, and I’m unable to play UHD content from my server, which is on the same network. The 8.1 update fixed other problems I was seeing (e.g. with playing some 1080p content), but it hasn’t solved this. No matter what I try, my UHD files are transcoded down to 1080p, even if I manually select “Original Quality” in the playback settings. Stopping and attempting to restart playback after selecting “Original Quality” results in the “An error occurred while attemping to play this video” pop-up, i.e. the original problem reported here.

I’ve gone through several permutations of settings, I’ve made sure that I’m following all of the guidelines that people have documented for enabling UHD playback. My server is hosted on a Core i9-9900K machine with 64GB of RAM, where the Plex database is on a locally-attached NVMe drive and the media content is on a Gluster volume attached over a 10GbE network. In other words, the server configuration is not the problem…

I went with the Shield TV specifically for the UHD playback, because it’s the only device other than the newest Apple TV that has a GbE port…but the performance of the Plex app for this platform has been very disappointing. I can play all of my UHD content using the Kodi app, but the whole point of overpowering my Plex server was so that I wouldn’t need to do that…

@kavmoradhassel: Client logs would help.

I have to ask:
Is the shield set to 4k or is auto resolution switching enabled in the Plex app? Are subtitles used?

Logs, please :slightly_smiling_face:

Have you received the logs?

Since my original post I have tried a lot of different settings to help stop the error on my local network. I can say that I have not had this error come back in the last 4 to 5 months, instead I have a smaller less annoying thing happen that is manageable.

The only thing that happens from time to time now is that a movie will start playing. And there will be absolutely no audio. I have trained my family to just exit out of the movie and then hit play from beginning and the audio comes in just fine after that. I am not sure why this is happening but it is way better than getting the error message.

Now, In my original post the error went away on some movies when I switched audio streams. But the movies that didn’t have a different audio option well the error would come up. And I have a lot of movies that don’t have an AC3 option. So I played around with the settings a lot more on my Media server and on the Shield, to get rid of the error.

I found a solution for my setup. So I’m sharing my settings, and software versions here just in case it might help someone else who has a similar setup. Maybe?

Again, this works for me it may not work for you. But I am sharing just in case it provides some insight/help.

Hardware. My router is a EdgeRouter X. I only mention this because some posts here mention the router being an issue. That being said. I also am running a older Mac on Mac OS 10.12.6.

For my setup the error went away after:

  1. Switching all movies to play AC3 audio instead of 5.1 or 7.1

  2. Turned off audio Boost

  3. Set up my local network to play media when there is no internet connection. There are a few posts here on the forums for setting up your Plex media Server to play media with no internet connection. I just followed one of those.

My settings in the Plex Media Server are below. I only listed the settings that I changed all the others are default: My Server version is Version 1.19.3.2852. However these settings have been like this for about 4 to 6 months now with good results.

My settings under Network are as follows:

-Enable Server Support for IPV6 is Checked

-Secure connections are set to Preferred

-Custom certificate Location is Blank

-Custom Certificate encryption key is blank

-Custom certificate domain is Blank

-Preferred Network Interface I have selected my specific router in the drop down.

-Disable weak TLS versions is NOT Checked .

-Enable local Network discovery GDM is Checked

-Remote Streams allowed per user is Unlimited

-LAN Networks is Blank

-Terminate session paused longer than is set to 30

-Treat Wan IP as LAN Bandwidth is Checked

-Enable Relay is Checked

-List of IP Addresses and networks that are allowed without auth: This I have put a network mask here. For example: 192.XXX.X.X/255.XXX.XXX.X. By putting this here it lets my house watch Plex even when the internet is out. Very useful for a house with small kids and frequent internet outages. When internet goes out, I just restart PMS and we are up and running again.

-Webhooks is NOT Checked

My settings under Transcoder are as follows:

-Transcoder quality is Automatic

-Transcoder temp directory is set to a internal hard drive on the server.

-Transcoder default throttle buffer is set to 90

-Background transcoding x264 preset is set to Medium

-Disable video stream transcoding is NOT Checked

  • Use Hardware acceleration when available is NOT Checked

-Use Hardware-accelerated video encoding is NOT Checked

-Maximum simultaneous video transcode is set to Unlimited

My settings under Language are as follows:

-Automatically select audio and subtitle tracks is Checked

-Prefer audio tracks is set to English

-Subtitle mode is Shown with Foreign audio

-Prefer subtitles is set to English

My settings for DLNA server are as follows:

-Everything here is NOT Checked

-Every box here is either at the default or blank

Once the server was set. I moved on to the Nvidia Shield settings. I have not updated my Shield and I have not updated the Plex app on the shield in a while. I am not sure what the most recent version is. I disabled auto update once I got my system working again. And I am too afraid to update any further so here is where I will stay for awhile. My Nvidia shield is going direct out HDMI into a Samsung TV. No A/V unit, no soundbar, just Shield to TV.

My software and settings for the Nvidia shield are as follows:

-Nvidia Shield Android TV SW Version: 8.0.2(32.5.205.105)

-Nvidia shield settings:. Default for all

Plex Application on Nvidia Shield Version:. 8.0.2.17816 (23329cc1)

Plex Application on Nvidia Shield Settings are as follows:

Under Video Quality:
Adjust Automatically:. Off
Home streaming:. Maximum
Remote Streaming: Maximum
Play smaller videos:. On

Audio Quality:
Remote Streaming: Original

Video:
Burn subs: Auto
Audio Boost: None ( putting this to none helped stop the error on many videos, not sure why, but turning this off helped a lot)

My android phone I messed with the settings also. I am running Version 8.1.2.18135 (cb28855c). The error went away when I put these settings on my android phone:

Quality:

Automatically adjust quality is Turned off

Limit Cell data is Off

Remote Stream is set to 4MBPS

Home Streaming is set to Recommended

Music Quality:

Remote Streaming is set to Original

Use Low quality on cellular is set Turned Off

Under Advanced:

Audio Boost is set to NONE (for some reason I think this is the one setting that caused all my problems. I have no proof. But as soon as I turned off audio boost it seems like many problems went away with clicking sounds, drop outs, and other audio issues.)

Burn subs is set to Auto

Under Player:

Prefer synced content is Checked

Device support is set to H264 maximum level 5.1(recommended)

Audio Passthrough is Disabled

Optional Audio support is set to AC3, DTS

Other players is NOT Checked

So that is my entire setup and settings. This is the combo that has stopped the error for me. So I have left it this way. And I will leave it this way for a long time.

I appreciate the Plex team and the Plex apps very much. They add much needed entertainment in our lives. And I know it is not easy to keep all these apps on all these devices going all the time. Thank you to the Plex devs for all your hard work. I hope sharing my settings with you will help you narrow it down.

turn off / uncheck automatically select audio.

my settings on server. try if works.

I have not received any logs from you

If you can reproduce the issue with the no audio reliably, can we get a log after you see it happen, and a sample of the offending video, please?
