Something isn't working for me. Every time I try to run MKV or AVI files on the X1 app I got the error "An error occurred while attempting to play this video".
I'm running Plex Server version 0.9.10.3.665 on a Synology 212j NAS (ARM processor) and everything works smoothly when I try to watch the videos on both smart tvs that I have at home.
For testing purposes I've installed Plex Server on my Mac Mini and everything works just fine with the Xbox One app. Still getting the same error when the app is connect to the server on my Synology NAS. Any official word on this?
I am going to guess it's because the synology cant transcode any media, and your xbone requires transcoding since mkv and avi are not natively supported (yet).

Even considering the fact that I'm on the preview program for X1 updates?
This is correct, MKV is not currently supported natively and therefore requires the video to be transcoded. As you're running an ARM based system, it's not powerful enough to have a transcoder. We'll look to improve the UX in the future to make this error message clear.
We're also working with Microsoft to bring MKV support to the application, which will also resolve your playback issues. Thanks for your patience.

I observed similar issues last night on my server, From memory I'm running an AMD A10-6800K with 8GB ram.
It's a reasonable CPU, but it seems that transcoding completely maxes it at 100% sadly. I might need to mess with the transcoding options in the web inteface to achieve better performance (...it is set to make my CPU hurt!)
If I change the quality setting the file will play fine.
Also getting this using my i5 mac mini, however, not all the time. It seems i can watch something, pause it, go do something else, and return to said video, resume playing and get the error, however, pressing on the back button, then carries on playing the file where it left off. ( hardwired and MKV)
Impossible to watch a film (.avi, .mp4, .mkv, ...) with my Synology ds212j :(
With the last update I can play MKV files stored on my DS212j using the official Media Player app on Xbox One, but Plex app still can't play any kind of media that are on my NAS, still showing the same error.
Can you try the Media Player app and see if it works for you too?
Yes with the Media Player App, all films are OK (.avi, .mkv, ...)
So Plex has a bug :(
I think it's more like the support for mkv has been out for max a few days. In the Plex server there is a list of what devices support which formats and containers. The list information regarding XBO hasn't been updated yet.
(just my 2 cents)

Good thinking. I remember when I first installed the server on my NAS and my Mac Mini XBO was only accepting the version 0.9.10.3.665. I understand that in order to update this information they have to release another version. Is XBO working with newer versions?
