No MKV? This is 2015...

I was so happy when i saw plex on Xbox One, but guess what, this 2014 system can't play MKV, is this a joke or are they serious?

My Synology is not even close to being able to transcode the data. What are my options?

You can pretty easily remux your files from MKV to MP4 which are native for xBox One.

I don't use MKV but thought it was supported on the xBox?

However with that said you Synology is probably good enough because the files shouldn't have to be transcoded but just re-muxed on the fly which plex should be able to do easily.

i use "MP4Tools" works great no problem and no transcoding.

Its actually XBOX that doesn't support MKV not Plex

The xbox one does support mkv. Unfortunately it doesn’t support all codecs that can be used in an mkv container. See below for detailed listing of what’s supported.

I use mp4 and would recommend everyone do also!

works great on my XBOX One, PS4, iPad, iPhone and Roku

Its hardwork, the point of plex is to have it simple, and after i need to convert every singel new file. Btw how long does it take to convert 6000 episodes?

Noiz, I posted in your other post. Xbox One does support MKV

Xbox One does support MKVs. Unfortunately, Microsoft has not yet allowed third party apps to use the codecs yet (this is also true in the Windows Store applications). Until MS allows third parties to use these codecs, Plex's hands are tied.

It's stupidity from microsoft, dunno why plex even bother to make an app.

Well, for those of use whose server is up to the task of remuxing or transcoding it's working great, so I for one am glad that they did.

Well said!

My family uses Plex everyday on multiple Xbox One's in multiple locations without issue. No file conversions needed... MKV's play fine also and it is supported, just not all the codecs like others had said. My suggestion would be to run Plex Server on better hardware, not that this is an excuse, but I've tried the NAS solutions, and there just too limiting....

I have not ever run into a playback issue from my Synology NAS with Plex to the Xbox one.  It supports direct streaming of the most popular containers (MP4, MKV) and the most popular video and audio formats (x264, AAC, AC3)...

See this posting at Xbox's website for the format support.

Handbrake is free and can transcode your video in batch with a lot of different options if you've got some old files that are using an odd format.  (If your PC has a modern Intel chip...the Quicksync encoding works pretty quickly with minimal strain on the PC)

The only playback problems I've had so far, has been stuttering with DTS audio tracks in movies (I haven't yet researched it to see why, assuming it's trying to transcode)

Again, yes the Xbox One does support MKVs, but it does not support them for 3rd party applications.

The plex server is remuxing the files to an mp4 container. The only way to have mkv support on the xbox one is via the dlna app, plex is still required to remux until MS allows MKVs to be used by 3rd party applications.

Hopefully with the launch of Windows10 and it's built in MKV support this will change.

I'm surprised that Plex stutters (well, not really stutters, but pauses every 5-15 seconds) with my server. I have an old computer as a server, but it has a passmark score of ~1990 (Wolfdale e7300). I thought that was almost enough to transcode video at 1080p....does that make sense that i see choppy playback on the xbox one if it is just remixing and transcoding the audio? I'm playing 1080p mkvs with dts-hd.

I'm happy to investigate further...unless i'm mistaken and my cpu is just not up to the task? is a passmark of 1990 not good enough for this?

thanks!

full bluray mkv on my server has about 45-55% cpu usage on a i7. i converted the file to mp4 aac audio and it dropped to 40-50%. any low bit rate mkv i play has little cpu usage at all. so im thinking its the high bitrate thats the issue. well thats what i got from the testing i did, and its the same on xb1, ps4, ps3, and 360. idk i could be wrong. just my 2 cents.

I use a Synology DS213+ NAS here, but only as the storage. Plex is running on an Intel NUC PC (Dual Core i5, 8GB RAM) running Windows Server 2012 R2. This also operates as my DHCP and DNS server, as well as a domain controller which automatically maps network drives to my NAS box whenever a user logs in :)

I believe this whole issue of transcoding will come to an end once Windows 10 is released and the Xbox One is updated to that OS.  We just have to deal with this another 6-9 months I'm afraid.  I don't see MS spending a lot of time updating the current Xbox in this manner.

The current Xbox has MKV, MS has just chosen to not allow 3rd party apps to use it (same with windows 8.1 app store).

we need MKV come on microsoft
