Android App: H.265 Stuttering / Lagging

Server Version#: 1.19.3.2764
Player Version#: 8.0.1.17410 (Samsung S9 - Android 10)

I’ve noticed that X.265 media encoded at 1080 resolution stutters on the android app. It also stutters streaming from default android player. Streaming X.265 4K video works fine in both plex and the default android app.
However, when streaming X.265 1080 video from my server using the VLC Android App, it works fine. So, I gather it’s a decoder issue. Couple of questions for the more knowledgeable users:

  1. What Android decoder does the Plex App use? What does VLC use?
  2. Is there a way to change the default decoder that the Plex app uses (so it uses the same decoder as VLC)?

Thank you.

1 - Plex uses the built in hevc decoder on your device. VLC uses their own. I don’t know the details.

2 - No.

Plex sues the same decoder for 1080p and 4K so if 4K works, than so should 1080p. The issue could be something else and not the resolution.

I did some more reading. Appears to be something about a missing “ctts atom” in the encoding. Other players have fixed this, but Plex has not.

Interesting. I’ll pass that along to the team, but from that thread it sounds like the issue is the file, not the player.

The current version of mkvtoolnix already has a checkbox which causes it to re-create those timestamps during remuxing.
Try if it fixes your file.
