Stuttering on 4K x265 via Plex App on Sony A9J - DLNA playback on native video app ok

I can play modest bitrates via smart TV but high-bitrate x265 fails to play in the Plex Android TV app whilst the same content plays ok via DLNA using the TV’s built in player. Stuttering/buffering occurs every 5-10 seconds in the Plex app.
I’m running the plex server on Linux and have enough CPU and a gigabit network connection, however the app is struggling to play the latest media formats. The TV is a current top-of-the-line model and amply capable of playing back x265 at 4K, so it seems to be a deficiency of the app’s hardware acceleration or internal architecture.
To clarify - the same x265 high-bitrate content plays fine, from the plex server, via DLNA in the TV’s native video app.
