Android app update broke fix for pixel users

Server Version#:
Player Version#: 2026.1.0
Hello, there exists an issue for plex on Pixel devices wanting to play content that has Dolby Atmos audio.

Pixel phones don’t support Dolby Atmos and don’t have the required codes, so it throws a generic codec error.

This is because pixel supports EAC3 but It doesn’t support EAC3 with Atmos. And this contradiction confuses plex and it doesn’t realise it needs to transcode for these pixel devices.

It was hard enough to figure this out, but at least we had an option in the app to prevent all EAC3 from playing meaning plex had to transcode either way so it was fixed.

The latest plex update removed this option from the android app and by the looks of it all advanced audio options.

So at currently by the looks of it all Atmos audio content is not playable on Pixel phones. As far as I can tell. Running a Pixel 7 Pro currently.

If anyone has any solution let me know. I would very much like to fix this.

Also. Thanks PLEX for not fixing this problem after years and taking away the workaround.

This right here. Plex is now completely useless on pixel devices. Even when forcing transcoding it does not play files with Atomos, plex seems to transcode the files to OPUS 5.1 which still does not play. Files without it play fine.

Ridiculous to have not fixed the issue for years then also remove the workaround rendering Plex useless for anyone using a Pixel.

tested on pixel 8 and 9a.
Please at least give us a workaround.

I’m going back trough the older versions and sofar it looks like the actual option to enable the fix have been removed a long time ago. As far as i can tell, we were just lucky that we set it before that, and it presisted until now. But with the latest release they probably removed the effect from the code completely.

Update i had to go back to version 10.26.0.2578 to find the advanced option reappear but it doesnt fix it anymore. So I have no idea what to do, possibly not even rollback will solve this for us now. Which is fantastic. Would be nice if Plex just fixed this in the first place.

Problem is almost every show and movie now has atmos audio even if it doesnt do much, its that format. I would love to have an answer from Plex something i pay for, but seemingly cant get any support to responde on any channel.

Confirmed, this is an issue here too. My friend mentioned he was having issues on both his Pixel and (older?) Chromecast Ultra. I tested on my Pixel 10 Pro and was able to reproduce it. I disabled Direct Play/Stream and it seemed to transcode to a compatible format for the videos I tested.

Anyway, please fix or provide a workaround until Google can fix their devices. :crossed_fingers:
