Android client (Xiaomi Mibox S) always transcodes even though is set to play original quality

Your second complaint is unrelated to this issue, I recommend you make a new post for that.

Does anyone know if there’s been any update on whether we’re going to get a fix for this?

At this point I’m guessing not. I used to have a lot of respect for the Plex team, to the point I bought a Plex Pass. But this simple bug is being ignored and it affects 2/4 of my household devices. They don’t seem to care.

This is happening to me on Sony Androids TV since updating to Oreo. Server transcodes everything over 8mb/s nothing I do stops it. Hardwired to my switch no adaptors present.

Confirming that I have the same issue. Xiaomi Mi Box S with UGreen 3.0 Gigabit adapter. Plex tanscodes super heavily when using the Ethernet adapter. Without changing any other settings, moving to Wifi gives a direct play that loads super quick. Changing back to Ethernet adapter and I’m back to blocky transcoding.

Best,

It looks like there’s a potential fix for this in the latest Beta release.

Edit: Nope, never mind

That is a bug related to using the 172 ip range for your local network. That is not the same issue.

Apologies, I’ll edit my post.

Same issue here, also with Ugreen USB Ethernet adapter. Did anyone try with another adapter?

Yes, I did. I am using EDIMAX ethernet adapter.

I’m using Amazon Basics adapter with Mi Box S. Same issue with that and the Jetstream box, which has built-in ethernet. This is a bug in Plex somehow misidentifying wired connections as low quality and requesting a 720kbps stream. If the Plex devs would PLEASE reply to this thread and notice that there are people running the Plex client on Android TV devices that don’t cost $200?

I downloaded the 6.0.1 version and works fine with usb adapter, with original quality, some times not appears the control to pause, foward and etc, but can watch vídeos at maximum quality. Só please fix the new version to do this too

Yeah, but we shouldn’t have to use such an outdated version of the app in order for it to work properly. It’s clearly a Plex issue.

Looks like they released another update 7.11 (now 7.11.1) and there appears to be nothing related to this issue. Unfortunately I haven’t been able to check it as my device hasn’t received that update yet.

Same here.

Mibox S + lenovo USB ethernet adapter.
Always starts transcoding.
Kodi addon works perfectly but i prefer the native app.
We need a fix, please.

Same issue for me, too.
Thank you for the Kodi/ Plux plugin solution, it’s not bad !
But I expect native Plex works again with the Mi Box S, as it works in my home with FireTV Stick, Roku Stick, and LG TV webOs app.

Also having the same issue with Mi box S, always transcodes to garbage SD quality when using the ethernet dongle, which defeats the purpose of having that dongle.

I am using a Dodoro dongle, this one to be specific:

I do have a CableCreation one I could try and see if it makes a difference (https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B013G4CEQE/)

However, it sounds like it’s a Plex bug and we would like a fix please.

Joined the forums to also chime in and say I am having the same problems as everyone else. Using the Mi Box S with Ugreen gigabit Ethernet adapter. Plex resorts to playing at 480P by default. On Wifi it plays at full quality right off the bat.

This seems to be a bug with the Plex app on Android TV. When on Ethernet i’m getting the, ‘resolution or bitrate exceeded maximum allowed’ message. On Wifi, so such message.

It sucks because the Wifi in my area is really busy so I can’t stream very reliability over Wifi, was hoping Ethernet would fix the issue…

Hello, I’m also confirming that I have the same issue. Xiaomi Mi Box S with a basic USB to ethernet adapter.
Sad to see that after so many months, the issue wasn’t solved.
I loved using the Plex server and thought it was worth paying for the Plex Pass but it was before noticing that Plex Player is barely usable with Android TV and the Mi Box S.

This seems like an issue with Android 8.1 that MiBox S runs.
Mi Box 3 works with the same usb dongle(s) without a problem, I have tested, however it’s running Android 8.0.

There’s also no HW changes on the Mi Box S, so I don’t see the HW being the issue here.

It seems there are several other HW boxes where this is an issue - what OS version are you guys running on those?

Hey guys!

Finally use the 6.0.1 app ver. and it’s working… almost lol.
For files with DTS, impossible to read them: no sound. So we need to activate passthrough but, it converts then video + audio…
