Android client (Xiaomi Mibox S) always transcodes even though is set to play original quality

Yeah, but that version is from over a year ago. So many changes since then.

So I just learned about the Plex add on for Kodi. I can confirm that it has no issues directly playing from the start of the stream. I think until Plex gets a handle on this issue, it’s what we’ll be using in the mean time.

Ah okay, directly Kody using Plex add-on.

I’ll test that i think ^^

@rcarteraz

Yes, it works perfect! Thanks

I’m running 8.1 on my Mi Box. The update to 9 is suppose to happen sometime, maybe that will sort things out.

Plex for Kodi does work, but man is it ugly. The actual Plex app has much better UI (and UX for that matter). I found that once the video starts playing you can just manaully set it to automatically convert then back to play original and then it Will direct play. A little janky but it works in the mean time.

This is a problem with the Plex Android app that Plex needs to address, not a problem with Android OS version.

But it seems that Plex development is more concerned with implementing new features that noone cares about, rather then fixing the issues with their app.
If I’m wrong, please Plex devs correct me, when will this bug be fixed?

Switching to an older app, running Plex through Kodi are all bandaids. The best thing they could do is implement a way to turn off transcoding on the client/player side, but they won’t do it and will justify why they won’t in a billion and one ways rather than face the fact that it’s a most practical option for many many users. Their whole model is based on transcoding, god forbid you have an option to turn this off, it will kill their whole platform.

Plex is acting like Apple to tell you what you need… what do users know anyway right?

Plex for Android is not stable, please we wait a correction for play movies on android TV

This is complete BS. Why in the world does Plex believe that Ethernet is slower than WiFi? All other applications (Netflix, Pluto, YouTube, etc.) play just fine 1080p/4k, but I add a wired connection to the device (Mi Box S) and Plex will only play 480p.

Same issue can be seen on two other Mi Boxes (3 and S) as well as a no name AndroidTV with a built in Ethernet port. Over Wifi, just fine, over Ethernet SD only.

Can someone from Plex actually chime in here? This is definitely a Plex issue.

This is absolutely unacceptable. Plex adds Tidal (Has anyone actually ever heard of this service before Plex added it?) instead of multiple other services it could tie in with that people actually use (Apple Music, Play Music, Spotify, hell, even Pandora) but can’t fix simple bugs. I paid for a lifetime membership, how do I contact Plex directly for support? Anyone have a number or email?

With the numerous issues and useless features with every new release, I wonder if there is room for a class action here.

They probably got $$$ for adding Tidal since Tidal are struggling to get a good userbase.

I paid Plex pass lifetime several years ago and I have enjoyed Plex for years. So I don’t feel screwed. I would have if I bought lifetime recently.

I am still Plex on our old Samsung smart tv.
But bought mibox s to two other tvs as well as planning for a new androidtv to replace our Samsung. Doubt I will stick to plex when we upgrade master TV.

Using subtitles for most movies so more or less everything gets transcoded due to subtitles/audio forces transcode of video.

Sure my server handles this without problems but I don’t like the idea to transcode unnecessary.

Same problem here with Mi Box S and Ethernet adapter.

I can manually change the quality to original but it just annoying… hopefully they fix this soon…

Switching to Emby on all my Android devices until this is resolved. Works great.

This problem has been going on for months now. When is Plex going to address this?
Enough with the useless new features… fix the basics that are broken!

Glad im not the only one having the same issue
But seems Plex not goin to adress this issue because the first post is from November still nothing.
Time to get an alternative i guess

According to @anon18523487 this issue has been reported as a bug on Jan 24th, but there is no ETA on a fix.

I would like to know an update on this, and so would all other posters that are having this issue.

Any chance Plex would have some sort of update or ETA, @anon18523487?

I believe plex will not fix this issue, since they talking nothing about, so let’s everyone change to another software, anyone knows a better alternative for plex?

Going on 5 months without a solution? Countless client updates since this issue first appeared. Not even a peep about this major bug in any of the changelogs. Using built-in Ethernet port or adapter results in the same ridiculous transcoding over Ethernet while WiFi works fine. Emby and Jellyfin servers both work properly, as does the Kodi plugin and MrMc clients. Plex development is falling behind.

I have same problem and this is very annoying…

This is bull$hit from a support perspective, and it’s very clear that Plex isn’t interested in making a great product but instead pushing other garbage addins to users.

I’d like to get an email that this issue is being looked at and resolved, not garbage Plex emails like this… “Stop, search in Sonos and listen”

Still nothing @Administrador_Plex @Plex ? Can we at least get some acknowledgement on this issue?!?!?

This is a paid product/service, where is the support?

Same problem here with Mi Box S and Ethernet adapter.

I noticed the Mi Box set the network type to cellular if the ethernet adapter is being used. This will also be the reason why Plex uses internet streaming settings instead of local area settings.

Has anyone maybe found a way to change the ethernet “cellular” connection type to the same settings that WiFi emulate?

I would like an answer on Plex’s progress on the bug report though, this is taking very long!

Ethernet is here! Earlier today I was contacted by a Plex employee with a test APK, I side-loaded and BAM, full speed Ethernet! I have asked permission to share or if it will be released soon. Will update when he responds.

Here is the funny part; I’ve been reaching out to Plex for well over a month regarding these issues, through their social media channels, without result. Yesterday, I used their contact form, but selected ‘Legal’ as their topic. Not even 24 hours later I’ve got an APK that works? Coincidence, I think not!
