Android phone unable to play any video; must check use external player

I received a new Motorola Android 14 phone. I have a variety of video file types on my Plex server, none of them play. I select “use external player” and all my videos work. That sticks me at original quality, which isn’t ideal for mobile. Also, there’s no position seek/resume.

I tried to play a free movie from Plex. The commercials played as they should, video and audio. The movie started, but it was a black screen with audio playing. Playback info says Plex is using Exoplayer. If the “use external player” is checked, the Plex free movie doesn’t play at all. (but at least I can play my content)

I’ve tried installing older APKs. I even tried installing Exo Player from the Play Store. (Worth a shot.) It didn’t help.

I’ve cleared cache and storage, rebooted, reinstalled. Any ideas?
