PLEX not allowing external video player on Android

Can’t stream externally using MXPlayer Pro. After today (Sep 12) a new update has broken that ability. Now the MXPlayer Pro app just crashes and says something is wrong. Also tried built in video player in Android with the same results. The PLEX app can display video natively with no issues. Seems to only be external apps. I use MX Player to play at 1.5x or higher and since this has literally been a feature requested for years I don’t see it happening anytime soon if ever.

Downgraded back to 9.30.0.3604 as a test and it worked flawlessly like before. Upgrade again and it stops working. I noticed there have been multiple updates for Android PLEX just in the past few days, but as of yet it is still not resolved.

No update is fixing this. Is anybody else having this issue? This is an option in the app so it’s not as if it’s out of the realm to ask for help.

Hello,

I have the same issue on one of my devices, the external Player just crashes. How did you downgrade?

Found it on apkmirror, downgraded and the external player works again. Apparently I only have issues on my older tablet on my Android 12 phone the same setup works with the latest version.

Same thing I did. The one I grabbed forced me to install the Amazon App Store, but it worked. Wish they’d fix it or at least look into it. Same issue with me. Just crashes.

I hope so as well, since there are a few files my table has issues with and using the external player solves this quite nicely.

It’s all about speed for me. Much easier to get through a season of a show when you can speed it up 1.5 or 1.8 preferably as it’s very watchable that way. I can do it through Kiwi Browser using an extension, but the cache fills up fast. Doesn’t seem to happen with a player.

Today I saw a new update and was excited until I realized it STILL doesn’t work on version 10.1.1.1347. This is a built-in option in the app. Fix it please or at least look into it.

I found a workaround : juste disable your external player by default in Android apps and always choose “only one time” when you launch your movie or show and it will work
But you need to select it each time…

That doesn’t work for me. I select one time every time. Attempts to load with a black screen briefly and that’s it. I can use it all day with an older version, but any new version crashes it. If I turn off external player it works great.

Does anyone from the PLEX dev team look at this forum? Since there is no way to contact actual support it would be nice to have some sort of ticket opened or someone that can correct this issue actually acknowledge it.

Just a quick question from my side. I only see this happening on my tablet which is running an older Android version than my phone where it is working. What Android version do you have on your devices?

That’s really interesting. I’m actually using a Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra with Android 13. My wife has one as well and I’ve not tested it on hers. Now you have me curious. I have made a YouTube video you can watch to see what’s happening if you want to watch it.

Hmm my theory was that the problem is only there for older Android versions but since you can reproduce it on 13 that theory seems busted.

Unfortunately I’m not sure if it’s version specific or what. Hopefully a new version will get released that might resolve it, but it’s been quite a while. I know the older version works just fine, so that means new bugs were introduced in the new builds it appears.
