Android TV "new player" can't play anything

I’m running both the Plex Media Server and Player on the new NVIDIA Shield TV Pro 2019. Content is stored on a HDD attached to my router and mounted as network storage on the Shield. Playback is very smooth and without any lag or buffering whatsoever - except from the new Plex player where the video freezes for the first 8-10 seconds on many videos, especially MKV files. All files play absolutely fine on the old player.

Not sure how to extract log files or samples though.

I have an issue with video that it is trying to start video, cannot play and just showing zero progress. After that I can scroll to some video position, age will be shown but again no actual play occurs.
Strange but tv restart helps! And after that video will be played.

Similar issue in these threads on Mibox S. Resolved with latest update.

For me, I only got freezing at the start of a movie when I had subtitles enabled. Try disabling subtitles and see if that fixes the issue.

Can the Plex corporation please just stop making this new garbage player the default? It’s clearly complete and utter junk…why is it enabled by default? It should be disabled by default!

I love having to give my wife and kids instructions every 3 days on how to go into advanced settings and turn off the new player! I swear! It’s loads of fun!

Get rid of this trash-heap “new player”! I have zero problems with the old one!

Then they should just move it to an experimental feature that has to be turned on instead of forcing it as the damn default

@spgra I’d kindly ask you to review our Community Guidelines, and keep it civil. Keep in mind, there are a finite number of combinations of files, hardware, and network we can test against. We can’t test against every possible combination. It was opt-in for quite a while, and in the last few months has transitioned to opt-out. We did this because we will be removing the old player in a forthcoming version, and want to try and capture as many issues and fix them as we can prior to removing the old version.

That won’t be happening, the old player will be going away, and the new player is the way forward. If you’re having issues with the new player, please provide some details so we can investigate.

Part of that includes Personal attacks of users, employees, or Plex, which includes our internal testers and beta testers. We endeavour to investigate every report we get, and as I’m sure you can see from reading through this very thread, I’ve been active at following up issues, and ensuring all necessary information gets to the relevant engineer.

That’s actually interesting how we all see things differently. I haven’t had a single issue with the new player since launch. It’s part of the reason I switched back from the ATV 4K. The old player was why my Shield sat in a drawer for a year.

Actually, I just tried the new player once again - and it seems to work now! All my video files play without any “freezing” at the beginning, so the Plex team must have made some changes.

I hereby rest my case

It still freezes at the beginning of TV shows roughly 30% of the time for me.

Can you provide some logs, and a sample file you can reproduce the issue with, please? Some more detail on the exact steps to reproduce would be appreciated too, please

Same issue here… under 8.2.1.18636 the streaming cannot even start… the error message appears.
Disable the new video player and - tadaaaa- the old player works fine.

Stick on the old player, Plex…

As has been mentioned several times, the old player will be going away, and work is focused on the new player. Can you please try on 8.3, which has been recently released, and let us know if you still have issues.

Hello. I have no issues since some point on my MIBOX4 and JBL Link Bar - both are on 9.x and both are certified Android TV

Thanks,
Misha

Dear Dave

Thanks fir your quick reply.

Just installed the 8.3 on my Philips OLED803 and unfortunately, still not running. Same error message.

As soon as I‘m enabling the old player - everything is running smoothly.

For me - it‘s hard to understand why the new player should be used by default and furthermore, the old player is going to be removed from plex when the software is not properly working.

Please talk to your team… I‘m pleased to use the new player with no error message popping up…

Can you give some more information about what’s not working, and provide some logs, please?

The same error message as mentioned in this thread.
An error occurred while attempting to play this video. Please try restarting both the Plex Media server and this app.
I will check for the log file.
