Any news yet on when this might become publicly available?
Assuming publicly available = released as our production app, then I can say that it will not be launching in 2025. As for dates in 2026, I am not going to comment mainly because I am not directly involved in that development effort. However, based on the conversations that I have seen, the focus is much more around performance and quality as opposed to hitting a specific date. We are also working through things on Roku like nav updates that will be pulled into the other TV clients before release. What is firm enough to mention is that this will hit a beta with more slots being opened up for review and comment before this goes public, so that will be a better indicator on timeframe than I can provide here in this message.
Is the BETA likely in 2025?
As I mentioned before, I am not directly involved in this project so take this with a big grain of salt. With that being said, I feel like chances are higher for any beta being launched after the first of the year.
Until the new experience supports Music and Photos it better not be released to Android TV.
So far as I am aware, they reversed course and will be including music and photos for the TV apps. They both currently appear in the new Roku app.
fwiw I hope it isn’t released until subtitles work properly again. I need that working properly for 95% of the content I watch, and so does a lot of the users on my server. The ones I had on iOS stopped using Plex, because it hasn’t worked properly for more than half a year, and as someone using a lot of Android devices it has been very frustrating personally. We just got proper ASS/SSA support on Android a few year ago and now it’s back to a nonfunctional state again.

I wonder
Any update on this?
Plex has like 3 devs left after the latest layoffs… Probably going to be a while unfortunately.
Wouldn’t getting the New Experience out the door on Android TV be a priority then since it unifies the codebase with mobile and means they have one less codebase to support and maintain making life easier on smaller dev teams?
Not if the new experience is severely broken, which it is. It’ll also trigger a new wave of end user complaints, which isn’t going to help them right now.
Its actually very much improved on Roku.
It’s much improved on the tvOS TestFlight builds (currently 2026.4.0) as well. It’s not perfect by any stretch, but neither was the legacy app if we’re being completely honest.
I suspect they’re just being very cautious with the Android TV rollout, which I’m ok with.
Not by my standards.
Is TV theme music working yet?
Sadly, it is not. I’ve been using the TF so long now that I’ve almost forgotten theme music is a thing.
Seeing as the Fire TV version is getting released over the next couple of weeks, I’d imagine the Android TV version will be close behind it.
Indeed. For those who didn’t see the announcement of the impending Fire TV release:
