AndroidTV and Audio

Server Version#: 1.16.6.1592
Player Version#: 7.26.0.14578

Any idea why I don‘t have no audio on half of my Plex Library? AndroidTV is a Philips oled804. I Never had any audio issues on that TV for More than a year. On a (different) AppleTV there are no Audio issues at all accessing the Same plex library!

Thanks and regards
Stefan

Is there a specific audio codec - TrueHD, AC3, dts, etc - that does not work?

Are you using TV speakers, passing audio to a receiver/soundbar?

If not using TV speakers, how are things connected - HDMI-ARC, Optical, etc?

Well, i habe a Collection of music videos with every Video/Audio Format that there is.
But its mainly VOB containers with AC3, DA, etc. Audio Tracks.

If thats relevant i can give More details.

On the TV I use HDMI-ARC, but switching to TV speakers doesnt change anything.
Videos that play audio work on Both speakers, and Vice versa.

If enabled, try turning off the new player in the Plex client settings: Advanced -> Enable new video player. You may have to scroll to the right to see it, right after “Share Crash Reports.” The option is there on my Shield. Not sure about other Android TV clients or if it is a Plex Pass only feature. .

Otherwise, you’re going to have to do some detective work. See if you can isolate it to a specific audio format or formats.

If your TV does not directly support the codec, then Plex will have to transcode it to a supported format. If the transcoder does not support the codec, then playback will fail.

If one of the videos just refuse to play, try muxing the audio & video tracks to a MKV container. MKVToolNix is a good tool for that.

Hello FordGuy61,

Thanks for your help, much appreciated!

Ok, changing the Plex player makes no difference.

Thus i did some research on my library with AVIcodec, and it turns out that thefollowing Audio codecs are Not played: „AC3 DVM“ and „Mpeg-1 audio Layer 2 (MP2)“.

As ive already said, this used to work up till recently and it still does on ATV‘s Plex Client.

Thanks, Stefan

Thanks for the info.

Can you edit the title of the thread? If so, make it more specific. Something like “Philips AndroidTV no longer plays MPEG2 and AC3 DVM audio.”

This seems like a correct summary of things:
Container: AVI
Audio format: AC3 DVM and MPEG2
Problem: No longer plays on Philips OLED804 AndroidTV. Still plays on other clients, such as AppleTV.

A couple more diagnostic questions:

When playing using AndroidTV, does Plex direct play, direct stream, or transcode the files?

If not already transcoding, what happens when you force a transcode? Changing the quality during playback should force a video and audio transcode.

You can see playback status in the Now Playing section of the Plex Dashboard. Plex Web -> Activity icon -> Dashboard.

I found a MPEG2 audio sample. Alcorn McBride Colored Circles Promo Clip (HD) at https://alcorn.com/support/test-files/.

It direct played on my Nvidia Shield and transcoded to AAC when I forced a transcode.

I could not find any “AC3 DVM” samples with which to test, nor any real information about that audio format. I’m not sure what is different from “regular” AC3 audio.

If you can point me to a sample, I’d be glad to see if it plays on my system.

Next steps would be to gather log files from the server & client and include Plex XML info for a sample of each video type.

Since this used to work, but no longer does so, it might take Plex involvement to fix. That’s why the diagnostic & log info is needed.

Also, is there some reason you’re still on PMS 1.16.6.1592? It was released in August 2019. I do not know if updating to the current 1.18.x release will help. However, there has been many updates since 1.16.x. For example, the Plex transcoder had many changes starting with 1.17.x.

Same question for the AndroidTV client. 7.26.0.14578 was release in December 2019. There have been several updates since then.

OK, once again thank you for your assistance.

I’ve tried to change the thread title, but I wasn’t very successful. Will read the help section more carefully…

When playing using AndroidTV, Plex does direct play.
When I change the quality, it does transcode the files and the audio track starts playing.
(Well, sort of, some videos still don’t have audio and you have to change it back to “direct play” and then to “change quality” again in order to work; which is still kind of irritating.)

The “AC3 DVM” is the standard AC3 format, it’s just showing up on “AVIcodec” this way.

Then I updated the AndroidTV plex Client to “7.29.2.16071” (Plex for Android (TV), TPM191E), but without any change in behaviour.

The Plex server runs on QNAP NAS TVS-471, which manages it’s Apps via the “App Center” and it doesn’t show any update on the Server version, even if the 1.16.6.1592 is rather old (installed 11/29/2019).

So my plan at the moment is to try and manually update the Plex Server version.
If this should fail or make no difference to the old version, I’ll start gathering the diagnostic data.
