Just recently I have found that I cannot cast to my TV from my ipad. I am running Plex server on a WD PR41oo server. I can cast BBC player, or other TV apps, just not Plex. I have the cast icon but when I touch it, there are no devices found.
Was running app version 1195 and just applied the update to 1215. It has made no difference.
But, oddly I can cast from my Android phone, also runnning 1195 at present.
can try these:
Turn on Local Network access
-
iPad Settings → Plex → Local Network = On.
-
If it was Off before, delete and reinstall Plex to trigger the prompt again.
-
Also check Settings → Privacy & Security → Local Network → allow Plex.
- Disable anything that hijacks networking
- Turn off VPNs, iCloud Private Relay, Cloudflare WARP, AdGuard, NextDNS apps.
- Confirm discovery works on iPad
-
Open the Google Home app. Your Chromecast must appear there.
-
Put iPad and Chromecast on the same Wi-Fi name (same SSID).
-
On the Wi-Fi, turn off client/AP isolation.
- Plex app cleanup
-
Force-quit Plex, reopen, try again.
-
Sign out of Plex in the app, sign in again.
-
Delete and reinstall the app.
- Network knobs that matter
- About DNS
-
config.claspws.tv can affect starting playback in the new app, not device discovery. Keep it reachable.
-
Allow a DNS rebinding exception for plex.direct on your DNS resolver.
- Workarounds that get you going now
-
Use AirPlay from iOS Control Center.
-
Cast from Plex Web on a computer.
-
Use the older Plex iOS app build you have.
- Still stuck? Read the Plex Dashboard while casting
Thanks very much for your suggestions. It actually started working again yesterday evening. But I looked at your list:
Items 1-3 yes, all good. Actually the Chromecast is wired, so one less possible point of failure.
- Will try thaty if it stops again.
- Your LAN must allow mDNS: UDP 5353 between iPad and Chromecast - not sure how Id go about that.
- Thats getting a bit above my paygrade now
