I’m at the end of my tether with this one, hoping someone can help.
I’ve had a PMS running on a Windows PC for 2 years, but I want to move it onto the Shield Pro.
However, absolutely nothing that I do will get the PMS service on the Shield to start, the Shield PMS does not show in the web app.
I must have been through literally every reported forum thread regarding this issue and tried every suggestion. I’ve cleared cache and data dozens of times, reinstalled dozens of time, ran setup dozens of times, tried changing storage location, plugged a USB drive in and ran setup, tried uninstalling the PMP app and reinstalling, tried logging in with a new user and setting up a fresh instance, updating Shield OS updating this that the other everything and nothing works… the PMS has never started on my Shield Pro and I’ve never seen the Shield PMS in my Plex account, I’m logged in across the board with the same account but the only PMS I’ve ever seen is my Windows PC based PMS. I’ve tried shutting that down and going through the uninstall dance, no joy there either.
I tried going through the logs, there were a few things in there to Google but most channels led to benign explanations.
I’m completely stumped on this, if anyone has a decent suggestion that doesn’t involving clearing the cache or data or reinstalling the apps I’d be most grateful to hear it!
What’s the storage situation on the Shield? Not that it SHOULD matter, but… if you’re desperate for new ideas plug in a SSD for app storage, if it didn’t already have a lot of storage built in.
It’ll work out eventually; I have a 2015 Shield and after about 2-3 years of updates, PMS started working well!
The Shield is pretty much brand new, nothing stored on it except basic apps, there’s loads of free internal storage. I already tried plugging a USB 1TB HDD into the Shield and setting the PMS storage to that, but still nothing.
Yea, I can’t really wait 2-3 years in the hope that it just works! Moving my PMS onto the Shield from the Windows PC was one of the compelling reasons for buying it, I have a dedicated PC with a Ryzen 7 1700X and a Quadro M4000 GPU perpetually powered on, running just for PMS which isn’t ideal at all!
The odd thing is since I’ve had the Shield I’ve went through a couple of Android OS updates on the Shield along with new PMS versions, thinking something will kick it, but nope, nothing.
I had similar problems with my O.G. Shield which is why I kind of thumbed my nose at Plex themselves with that “2-3 years” comment… I tried using Plex about once every 6 months and it was a poor experience every time. Sometimes the service wouldn’t start, other times it would start and then poop out later and need a reboot… Then one day, all that stopped happening and it just worked like it was supposed to… more or less.
It was super frustrating and I didn’t even buy the Shield for Plex so I can imagine how you feel.
You have tried everything that seems reasonable, plus some. I only have 3 ideas left that are within your control and they are all dead chicken-waving desperation voodoo.
Do a factory reset on the Shield and try again. You mentioned doing OS updates, but not a full reset.
If that doesn’t work, try disconnecting your Shield from your LAN before starting PMS. (It would be crazy for PMS to see something on the LAN that made it crash, but… we’re desperate here.)
And if that doesn’t provide a fruitful lead… exchange the Shield, if you still can. It shouldn’t matter, but stranger things have happened.
