Any plans on an official Apple TV Plex app

Just checking if there are any plans to release an official Apple TV Plex app?

PlexConnect is a third party app and Plex Inc do not give out roadmap details so your guess is as good as ours.  

Also:

  • there is no ATV app store, just authorised apps from selected partners
  • the only real difference between the authorised native ATV apps and PlexConnect app is that we force it on there via DNS poisoning, the functionality is the same as the other apps so i am not sure what an official app could bring to the party apart from removing the need to run a PlexConnect serving device (you would still need to run a PMS somewhere though to serve the content)
  • the current native apps connect to the cloud rather than a local (PMS) server; we are unique in this and it is unknown if Apple would ever allow this architecture officially (excluding 'home sharing' connecting to iTunes, which they are already moving away from in favour of iCloud content)

AppleTV is essentially running on iOS, therefore there is already an official Plex client for iOS in the Apple App Store which will also airplay to the AppleTV quite nicely. As far as developing an app specifically for the AppleTV, at this point there is no AppleTV App Store. I also don’t see one coming anytime soon but maybe in the future, who knows. Apple likes to keep things tight and locked to their liking and I don’t see the AppleTV becoming a very customizable device. It’s main reason for development was to get people involved in the iTunes ecosystem and spending money on content. That is where Apple makes their money. For streaming your own content they offer the iTunes home sharing.


It’s a good thing we have things like Plexconnect as an option because I don’t see Apple ever offering anything other than a iTunes box to spend money… Which is exactly what the AppleTV is and was designed to be.

Adding to foob4r, i'm sure Apple will never allow a built in native Plex app in aTV, but only at aTV App Store, which doesn't exist right now.
