Ooo, shiny stuff
store will only have games
store will only have games
No way ..
I can't think of any reason why Apple wouldn't open an AppleTV App Store. There's no downside from my point of view, but a lot of upsides (a big one being an official way to get Plex on the AppleTV ;) ).
But on the other hand, they haven't opened one for years now, so there has to be some reason(s) for them...
Anyway, I'll be really glad if they finally decide to do that! It would definitely tempt me to re-vamp my Objective-C skills and put my under used iOS developer license to good use.
They might just keep it JS/XML apps as currently
They might just keep it JS/XML apps as currently ;)
For those of us who don't really know what that means, are you saying Plex likely could or couldn't eventually find its way to an ATV App Store?

You want them too ;)

If it will become real any time (I'm talking about atv store) no reason for it not to come. It's on the iphone so why not on the ATV?..
Remember this also:
I am not from the ones here who understands the tech stuff deeply but many here have said apple can kill PlexConnect anytime probably without software update now. Long story short-Except of making the installation bit longer with cert needed nothing changed since the script published. Apple probably does understand how great PlexConnect is for them. Unlike iphone jailbreak, this one isn't causing pirate/easier pirate while when device is jailbroken it's easy too install pirated apps (Sadly it's not enough that the jailbreakers are AGAINST that). But PlexConnect doesn't causing apps steling (Well, nothing to steal yet ;) )
PlexConnect just making people use and love there ATV's more .. I bought another ATV cause of PlexConnect.
Made a friends buying 2 (so far) for PlexConnect.
Bought 1 for present (Which i possibly would not buy if PlexConnect was not exist).
So as a "geek" which know and love PlexConnect i made apple another 396$!
And i am one person that just love technology and love PlexConnect too. That's the reason apple shoud never touch PlexConnect, only openning an app store :)
For those of us who don't really know what that means, are you saying Plex likely could or couldn't eventually find its way to an ATV App Store?
That all sounds promising. I hope Plex developers are planning and prepared to submit, if and when the opportunity presents.
Yeah that was just a “what if…” but hopefully we will see soon what Apple have planned
I have said it before, but I'd dearly love to see an App Store, or at least a Channel Store for the Apple TV. I think we all know that we'd like an official Plex client, and that no offence is meant in the slightest to our project owners. I've offered opinions before on why I can see why apple would, even if there was a channel store, prohibit a Plex item (why? if you want movies, buy / rent from the apple cloud, or import them into iTunes and use Home Sharing).
Apple can be "challenging" to deal with, trust me on that, especially if you have something that competes with them. I see things from the consumer viewpoint, as I am one, but I also see it from the app development viewpoint, as I'm part of an app development team, of an app that has seen "challenges" due it it operating in a sector that Apple is interested in.
I am curious to see what a 4th Gen AppleTV would bring. Faster perhaps, bit more RAM, support for 4K? What else is there really on the hardware side, even smaller form factor perhaps, but why? The primary would be software, maybe a revamp to make it more iOS 7 like in look and feel, but is that needed?
Hmm, perhaps the same size as one of the new Time Caspule things. Why? PVR, thats why. Do a deal with cable companies to have channels on ATV, use the Apple TV instead of a cable companies PVR unit. Not too sure I can see them putting a coax port on it and allowing hookup that way, no need really if you have an internet connection.
I think it's really going to be software change, wether it'll be something that filters down to the 3rd gen I don't know. It could be 4th gen and higher.
The thing is, no-one knows what they are up to. We know at least one new product category is coming, and that is a fact you can take to the bank, not sure if anything will be seen / in users hands from that, but ATV has shifted from Hobby to a proper product line, so perhaps that is one of these new categories, it wouldn't be a lie per-se.
We wait with baited breath.
Pretty sure they will upgrade the wifi.
I would ask, how drastically different was the ATV 3 from the ATV 2? I think the ATV 4 will be similarly different from the ATV 3.
How drastic was the diffrent between ATV1 and AT2?
How stingy has apple been since they’re money hungry. Let’s just think about the progression from iPhone 4 to 5s. Very small changes.
How drastic was the diffrent between ATV1 and AT2? ;)
Different color?
ATV1 and ATV2 is very different. Hard drive based vs flash based. ATV ran OS X and ATV2 runs iOS. Form factor was different. No component output on ATV 2 and later.
From ATV2 and 3, well, the three supports 1080p, probably faster processor.
Good point about WiFi, had not thought about that, so it'll have 801ac as that seems to be the new thing these days.
Some interesting info / rumours on macrumors this morning about what Apple might be doing. Also, seems Comcast is buying Time Warner, so that might also fit into things, as Apple has been said to have been talking with Cable companies (obviously US only).
Yes, but I think with 2 and 3 Apple decided upon a cloud/streaming model on an iOS base that they will stick with. I also think they like the form factor a lot.
i have read some articles where they believe it will be a combined Apple tv and airport express.. .. that would make sense, i also think they will stay to the design of the ATV with a few changes.. maybe slight bigger to fit all the new components, and more memory and new chip..
but one can only speculate :)
