Any way to get PlexConnect to display square cover art?

I have most of my TV shows tagged with square cover art (rather than the typical vertical posters) because I prefer the way it looks on my TV. Even though I have the PMS set to look at local media assets first, Plex HT and PlexConnect don’t display the square cover art.

Is there any way to enable square cover art or does Plex lack this capability?

This is an interesting problem, as I have seen episodes mis-scrape metadata and actually display square artwork. Now that said, it's the episode artwork, but are you saying that it's the season artwork you have as square? I am surprised that PMS or Plexconnect would actually care.

Can you post a log of an example of square artwork not displaying?

I've never had Plex Home Theater or PlexConnect display the square season artwork that I've tagged my MP4s with, even though I've set the PMS to look at local media assets first.

Gotcha, so the seasons are portraits no matter what. Hmmm, can't say I've run into that. I've hate to ask, but in PMS, have you attempted the "enter a url" option where you have found a website (non-https) that hosts the square season poster and told PMS that is the season poster? It would be a tedious way to get it done, but I think that the PMS, and thus Plexconnect, would have to listen to that instruction.

Scratch that, I just tried it and the square image is "framed" in the portrait size. Looks like the answer is no...

It's frustrating. I even added the square artwork files to the TV show folders (as per these instructions) and PlexConnect and PHT still don't show the square artwork.

I think it is because PMS is designed only to show posters or banner artwork as this is what the metadata sites provide.

Have you tried asking in the PMS or agent forum?

That makes sense since the main metadata sites don't yet offer square cover art.

Was a solution ever found for square artwork?

We use posters in PlexConnect in different themes (non official PlexConnect) I’m not sure if it would help you for your channel development but its more of a poster then square artwork:
