Support non-square album artwork

I just switched from using iTunes to using Plex for my primary music library.

It’s really great so far, but some of my album art is being cropped because it is cassette tape artwork (2:3) rather than vinyl/CD artwork (1:1-ish). By comparison, iTunes does not crop my weird album art.

It would be great if Plex were more forgiving with album art dimensions.

Let me know if you’d like any more information or examples.

I just wanted to bump this cause I think it would be a great feature. Apple Music/iTunes really had great support for any artwork type. The fact that Plex is lacking this has bothered me for a while now.

I personally, have a lot of media that only exists on cassette tape, and thus only have cassette tape artwork to upload. It would be awesome if Plex supported the artwork better instead of just cropping it down to a square.

I have some albums in my library with non-square artwork that i’d love to see in my Plexamp client. i really have no idea how metadata retrieval works to get to Plexamp, but it seems like an easy fix. if i have uploaded a non-square poster to my PMS, does it get cropped before it gets to Plexamp? or could this be fixed by their devs?

Probably a pretty niche request. I just started digging into parts of my library and just realized that much of my music teaching materials uses the book covers as album art (an aspect ration closer to a movie poster). Support for non-square artwork/artists would be great. But at the very least give us the tools to control the crop, as the title/head isn’t always in the center of the crop.

Not so niche, I think. Cassettes or books, sure, but CDs come in jewel cases, digipaks, and box sets. Jewel case covers covers tend to be square, some box sets are square, but many are not. Digipaks, which are becoming more common, are almost never square.

I’d like to see Plex accommodate non-square album art. It would be fine to keep a square space for the album — just scale the album image so the longest side doesn’t exceed the square.

By default, the cover art in any player is a square.
However, if the cover art isn’t square, it’s visually cropped.
The cropping only happens in the end device as the plex server saves the full image.
I usually scan my Albums so not every pic is square
This is a simple feature request for a Plexamp to have settings related to the cover art being original size or cropped.
Additionally, while playing music, I would like to browse the rest of available images by swiping right/left for example. This gesture doesn’t have a purpose yet and It would make a great addition for my scans.

I like this idea. I have a lot of music with weird cover art that would benefit from the option to not crop in plexamp.

I like the sleeve art in my music library to look as much like the real thing as possible.

At the moment, Plex uses a square & “zooms in” on the artwork so that the shortest side fills the space. This means that if the CD was sold in something like a “long box” or even a digipak, that part of the image is cropped.

I’d very much like the option to keep the grid of squares but choose Plex to fit it to the long dimension instead, so that everything is showing the shape it really is in real life.

This is incorrect. Roon, for example, has a quare grid but shows the whole image within that. Here is a screenshot showing a section of my Bond soundtracks which are mostly square covers from jewel cases but the digipak version of the original Casino Royale movie is not square & is shown in full.
