Any ways to get this to work on a VPN?

My server is on a VPN and I cannot get this app to work. It seems to be a common issue. Any way around this besides switching to my public IP?

First I have never tried this with a PS4 since I have no reason to, but I have used a VPN to plex server from PC/Macs/iOS with no issues.  You really don't provide any details so not much I can say except the basics...

Obviously you would have to have some kind of point to point VPN setup with a couple of routers, there of course is no VPN client for PS4s.

1. Make sure your NAT setup is correct for reaching internal resources through a VPN (Probably the number one thing people get wrong on VPN setups)....these configurations vary greatly from device to device, but the basic concept is the same.

2. Make sure your routes are setup correctly for reaching internal resources from your VPN subnet.

2. You might want to publish your server to MyPlex so your internal IP addresses are published.  That way when your clients are logged into myplex they already know the internal address (after publishing, you can then block external access again to the plex server via ACL or whatever you normally do).

I have definitely seen some devices basically flounder if the Plex Server and the client are not on the same subnet...aka Roku.  So not really sure if you can do it or not.  It would be more helpful if you could at least state that you have this configuration working fine with devices other than your PS4 going through the exact same networking hardware.

Thanks RABCO, a lot of us are having the same issue and if a work around can be found, then I'm hoping a simple fix can be applied to just about everyone. In my case I was just fine using plex with the browser on PS4 and suddenly after the app came out, I couldn't get the browser to find my server anymore. Nothing changed on my end. It just stopped working :(

I'm not the best at networking, but I'm going to look at all the items you posted to try and find an answer.

I found a soultion that works for me. The reason I have a VPN is for uTorrent. I use Private Internet Access for my VPN. Private Internet Access offers a proxy to it's customers so I disabled the VPN in the system try and applied the proxy to uTorrent. This set up is perfect for me now as I no longer need the VPN program connected (although I can turn it on if I want to) and my uTorrent remains anonymous.

While I'm glad you found a solution to your problem, I honestly cannot imagine we are talking about the same thing, nor that this is a common configuration effecting "a lot" of people.

What I am describing is:

Plex Server in Building A. (for example some place in Texas).

Plex Client in building B.  (for example some place in California).

A Point-to-Point VPN connects the networks of Building A and Building B.

Sorry, but I honestly have no idea what you are talking about

RABCO, we aren't using a VPN tunnel to go from one location to another between the Plex Server and Client, this is simply a VPN service that changes or masks the internet service IP in our location.

cougar, I use the same service as you and as soon as the Playstation app was installed, I could no longer access my Plex server while using the PIA VPN client on the server. Disconnecting the VPN was not adequate for me, I had to exit the application.

What I don't understand, is what it matters at all wether or not the VPN is connected? I can access Plex on my computers and tablets (android) with no issues WHILE the VPN is engaged. This is something that needs to be addressed, unfortunately I can't use the proxy for my torrent client, I need to have my IP changed to a stateside IP since I'm an American living overseas. I like my Netflix!

Gotcha.  This is basically a routing problem, and its compounded by the fact that The PS4 Plex app tries to make its initial connection utilizing your published external IP address.  What you are basically wanting is asymmetrical routing so certain traffic will not go through the VPN.  If you haven't seen the following thread this may be worth looking into:

https://forums.plex.tv/topic/64600-using-plex-server-with-a-vpn/

If the myplex component wasn't forced on you, and you could specify a manual IP address in the PS4 app you could probably get around this problem depending on where the VPN tunnel is established.  I have heard that there are certain VPN providers that will actually allow you to do port forwarding while connected which I guess could be an option although again I have never tried such a thing.

Unfortunately, there is not really a reason for me to try and test this myself so I can't really provide any first hand experience with getting this to work.  Anyways, not sure if the link will help you guys or not but good luck.
