Anyone get access to PLEX Cloud yet?

I am more than willing to let a kidney go for an invite into the cloud, would do anything.

You did say anything, right? Well its time I introduce you to Plex Home Surgery… the hottest cord-cutting feature around! Be prepared to be astounded by the level of precision. Exactly what the doctor ordered for getting Plex Cloud!

In all seriousness, we are excited about getting Plex Cloud into the hands of more users. Stay tuned!

I will literally do ANYTHING for an invite…

I need bullet points.

Plex Cloud is not ready for normal use, not even for Plex pass members. The beta was opened so at least some could get a taste. The other option was not releasing it and keep it secret even longer. We thought this would be better.

As stated, it’s not ready for normal use yet. There are still a lot of bugs which are being worked on.

Just to give you guys a heads up on whats been happening.

  • Server’s shutting down randomly and not coming back online - partially fixed as of today.
  • Scanning issues with adding items, trailers and extras being auto added into the library and unable to be deleted.
  • Trancoding issues with playback - seems mostly fixed now.
  • Casting not currently working.
  • No plugin support
  • No subtitle support
  • Heavy rate limiting on Amazon, which is leading to errors and long library prescans.
  • Issues with music library - long library scans

To my knowledge they have been adding people to test, but have to be careful not to overload the system, Amazon apparently has been putting on some hard rate limits and Plex has been working with them to correct it.

The way the server is now, is it NOT a replacement for your current media server. In time it will be but at the moment, its like a early alpha compared to a beta.

The dev’s and the testers have done a great job so far with support and helping to get these things fixed. Keep up the great work!

I thought that’s some kinky stuff at first.

Thanks for posting the screen shot. I didn’t realize it changed Cloud-to-Butt to Butt-to-Butt! So apparently I made no sense at all.

Actually that screenshot is taken with mentioned extension installed. It took a while before I realized what is what.

I think we just need to be patient. There is no point in having access if it’s buggy at the moment. Just take the waiting time and get your data uploaded. If they gave all plex pass members access and everyone started typing in these forums about various issues then it’s going to cause chaos. I am happy to wait and get access when this thing is ready to go.

The website says “Get to use the newest and coolest features before everyone else! Users can also submit feature requests and gain access to special Plex Pass members-only forums” and then “Early Access: Be the first to get exclusive access to new features and enjoy awesome premium ones.” How Plex Cloud doesn’t fall under any of those I don’t understand.

There is a big difference in participating in a beta test of a new piece of software or getting early access to the specific software for general use. In the case of Plex Cloud it sounds like ‘alpha test’ might be a better description. And yes, I would love to use Plex Cloud ‘as soon as possible’, and yes, I totally understand why the Plex team is “taking it slow” to make sure the biggest issues are fixed before inviting more people. SImply put: Plex Cloud isn’t ready (enough) for a larger scale release. It has bugs and other issues. If they did invite everyone there would probably hundreds of posts with complains that it’s broken or not working as intented, and a few of those people will probably say that Plex sucks etcetera. Be patient

Great info here thanks! Maybe hearing how buggy it is will allow some people to relax on not being able to test it ;).

He more or less summed up all the issues I have with my plex “cloud” server i have hosted on digitalocean. Idk much about the rate limiting but Amazon API limitations do cause a lot of errors and playback buffering from time to time

I don’t see how this is a win for Amazon unless they can upsell you on top of the $60/year for storage. It takes computing power to do all this. While AWS is well suited for this it is not free.

I can see some sort of pricing tier coming out. 1 stream, 2 streams and so on.

You might be right, however… in my case they went from getting nothing (I didn’t know about this) to $60/year when the trial is over. That’s a win right there

Sadly for Dropbox, that means they lost me as a paying customer, Amazon Cloud in combination with odrive works just as well for half the price and “unlimited” times the space. You win some, you lose some

I love to play around with different plex setups so this is a really cool way to do this. I’ve tried to set stuff like this up in the past but it’s really nice to see them support it.

I’ve been a Lifetime member for a while, so I hope that gives me a chance to get in on the beta at some point.

Would love to help test this out and report any bugs!
I have plenty of different hardware to test plex on too if that helps.

Rclone is another nice program that can upload your data to Amazon. You can even copy/sync from cloud to cloud. Like Google Drive to Amazon Cloud, or Local Drive to Amazon Cloud. Need to be familiar with command line though.

How do I become familiar with command line, where do I go to learn it?

Right here: Amazon Drive and Install

I have been gradually copying my library from my NAS to Amazon Drive. My QNAP has some nice utilities for this, but they lack the ability to specify bandwidth. As a result, they tend to really put the hurt on my internet connection to the point where other activities become difficult. I solved this by doing the initial migration with Amazon’s desktop utility, which allows me to control both the number of threads and the amount of bandwidth per thread. It is taking longer, but my network is usable and I’m not in that big of a hurry. Once I get a library uploaded, I set it up in the QNAP Cloud Sync backup utility, so that all new content is automatically uploaded. This gives me both a solid backup and the ability to jump right in on the beta, once I get an invite. I’ve been able to upload about 3.7TB of content thus far, which means I am about half done.

Hello
please i’m looking forward for an invite. i’d like to try Plex Cloud.
i already have in my ACD account Tb of movies & music waiting for Plex !
Thanks a lot
Plex is a great app!

Little too early for the announcement I think.

Great video to intice users in, but without the option to use it is like dangling a carrot and lobbing it in the ocean.

Itching to get in on the Amazon Cloud Plex action and patience isn’t one of my strong points. Find the waiting quite frustrating.

Even if it is buggy and falls apart around my ears, I’d still love to be involved in the testing.

All my media is already up waiting to go too!

If you’re one of the lucky few it does seem to work for, it’s great. Unfortunately the Amazon issues are overwhelming and Amazon is the bottleneck
All my discussions with other Ninjas and what I hear from the employees I interact with say that they will add more and more users to the Beta as the core issues get resolved.

It seems Amazon had it working well enough for the devs to pull it together enough for Beta. As soon as they opened it up to folks outside that small circle, it fell apart. The software works fine. Amazon doesn’t. I’m not pointing fingers but even my limited involvement has shown me that PMS isn’t the issue.

So now we wait while they ‘talk’ with Amazon folks to get it fixed.
