Hi, great discussion you have here. Great feedback from Plex!
I bought my NUC11 back in may for the exact same purpose, but now using it as home desktop. Glad that we may have update at some point.
I’d suggest just looking at eBay/Amazon.
Plenty around if you buy from overseas. I think there are some supply issues in North America (I assume that’s where you are)
There are supply issues here in North America (USA).
I was finally able to put together a configuration with ample supply available to procure the parts and build.
Guess what I’ll be doing and sending to the HQ lab?
Did you build your own?
I think it was mentioned earlier in this thread that there was a difference between the desktop and mobile versions of the iris XE that allowed desktop users to work around this issue.
The NUC uses the mobile version of the CPU/GPU. So it’s important that a NUC (or at least a similarly specced laptop) is used to reproduce this issue
Yes, nuc & mobile → Tiger lake
Desktops → Rocket Lake
Gen 12
Hi All
First off Platform is Windows 10 Pro - sorry in advance
Just setup a 1136G7 NUC alike with PMS on and tested a HW transcode from a 4k HEVC to 720p and its now been successfully chugging away for over 30min, no crashes.
Is the Iris XE issues specifically in relation to HDR tone mapping or just HW transcode in general.
Im not sure if iv misunderstood the issue with 11th gen QSV or if i have something on my hands that could be of help.
A little feedback would be appreciated
this is a thread specifically for linux. The transcoding issue doesn’t occur on windows, but my testing there has been limited.
No.
I only stated i was on Windows.
My question was the Iris XE issue in general, the question asked was platform agnostic.
I stated I may have misunderstood the issue at hand and was open to offer a hand if my specific situation was unique and could yield a benefit to the community.
Dont be a post ■■■■
@Ronyart I was not trolling you, no need to be so sensitive
The issue with transcoding we have been discussing on this thread occurs on linux, and has been confirmed to be a combination of user space (plex) and system space (kernel). This issue does not occur on windows, but does occur on every favour and version of linux we have collectively tested; every single time.
Hi Ronyart,
To follow @DarthBJW’s post, my knowledge the HW transcoding issues aren’t experienced when Plex is running within Windows 10 on a Tiger Lake device, however you will experience the known limitations with Tone Mapping running Plex within Windows - which is one of the reasons why I decided to pursue a Linux build with the latest Nuc 11… Which if you read through this thread you’ll understand we’ve been having our issues lol
Some links for you which I found helpful:

See the windows section under requirements
https://www.reddit.com/r/PleX/comments/lz7ete/question_about_hdr_tone_mapping/
Quote: “The best setups for using it, for now, are Linux servers because they support completing the tone mapping processing entirely in hardware. Windows servers have to run it through regular CPU horsepower, even if the decode and encode is being done by HW. The tone mapping process is sandwiched between those two steps as it’s own thing.”
There is no work around for desktop UHD 750 (aka iris XE with less EUs) on desktop SKU with plex. It’s the same problems as on the NUC including the corruptions to the image with tone mapping enabled.
Fixing the issue on one platform should carry over to the other platform. The UHD graphics on the NUC11 and 11th gen rocket lake desktop chips is same but with less EUs on the desktop chip. Some of the lower rocket lake desktop i5 SKUs have UHD 730 with even fewer EUs. But they probably have the same issue as well.
@emb531 As Debian 11 just came out, did you test Plex on it?
Any luck sourcing a test machine?
I think there are two efforts underway.
- Procurement / order placed (from what I last heard)
- Selected users contacted to work with privately.
@ChuckPa I offered my NUC up to ship to Plex HQ or give access to directly. I work overnights so my availability may be beneficial timezone-wise. Let me know. (no messages in my inbox yet)
well i’m into the same situation as talked about here.
i tried with my nuc8i3 with unraid (linux) which run more perfect then my new system with a i5-11600 on windows 10. so i decided to change my new system to unraid…
only to find out sdr tone mapping epicly failed… 4k transcoding with tone mapping gives the green artifcast.
Really hoping they come up with a solution soon…
I hope they can solve the issue. I’m an unraid user as well
I have forwarded all the info to Engineering ( users, equipment access, and what to buy)
Nothing I can do
Given the work required. you’ll probably see a forum preview before I know about it
Is there a public facing git or JIRA or something that shows dev chatter? Or is that all strictly internal?
