Anyone thinking of upgrading to the new shield?

Just curious if anyone is upgrading to the new Nvidia shield that is due out next week. Specs state it will only be 25% fast and the new remote looks nicer. I wonder how that translates to Plex speed and transcoding. I am a little disappointed they are keeping the storage at 16GB. Thoughts?

I already got one two days ago. I did it for the up scaling (much improved over the old models) and dolby vision and atmos. Speed wise, I really hadn’t noticed much of a difference. Also like the new remote much better.

I’m considering picking one up too. Have you noticed any improvement in video quality with the upscaler? That’s the biggest selling point for me. There’s another thread here that said the Plex app doesn’t use the built-in video player, so that fancy new AI scaler doesn’t kick in.

Yeah, I think it’s pretty on par with the Lg C8 I have and even my Sony 900f on upscaling. Shield plex app uses exoplayer 2 which I believe is the built in player.
Just tested it and it works well with plex. Even works with MrMC using the plex plugin.
There are three base settings. Basic, Enhanced, and AI-Enhanced and then in the latter there is high, medium and low.
I find that the Enhanced setting is much closer to the Sony upscaled than the other settings. AI-Enhanced seems to be just a little too much of a good thing.
However on my Lg C8, AI-Enhanced low looks better and cleaner than the Lg upscale to my eyes.

Hi

Picture quality is identical to most other things I’ve used (it’s digital after all, there is no reason one decoder should look better than another except for other post processing the box may do after unless it now supports better formats you couldn’t play before), but without the quirks and bugs I’ve seen on cheap Android TV boxes.

As for the AI Upscaler it is just sharpness controls ramped up to the max, its not particularly pleasant after a while. AI is just a marketing term, there is no AI involved in the box, it is just some reference to how they “learnt” from footage in the lab using so called AI then somehow tweaked the sharpening and processing based on that. It’s a very tenuous link to AI, used for effect for marketing, which seems to have worked given all the references to it  Just ramp up all the sharpness controls your TV has for the same effect!

Also note that the so called AI upscaler only works with up to 30 fps content, so with most videos now on streaming sites moving up to 60 fps, and with broadcast TV, you may find it is off more than it is on.

My guess is the upscaler may be recognising certain popular films and then optimising the level based on the particular content, this explains why most of the reviewers on the day who obviously had the box early to get the reviews ready once the embargo lifted all demo with the same film clips, which were obviously supplied by Nvidia.

It’s a great box, well worth it, but don’t just buy it for the AI upscaling claims is my advice

To be fair, I’ll be getting the tube.

From what I have read the tube will not run Plex very well. Can anyone verify?

u mean as a server ? i think as a plex client ,still it will the best plex client we have , as far as I discovered the nvidia shield best client so far and the new tube version wont be any worse , I have 2017 pro 500GB SSHD version and htpc , the shield play more direct play stuff than my HTPC and LG B7 and C8

am thinking to buy the tube version because I need 1 more Nvidia shield for my bro

Oops yes I mean the tube will not run Plex Server. Just curious if 25% faster means I can eek 1 extra simultaneous trans-code out of the new Nvidia Shield. Anyone do any testing?
