API Control

Does the new Plex Player support the API control for navigation / playback?

Things like:

  • /player/navigation/home
  • /player/navigation/music
  • /player/navigation/moveUp
  • /player/navigation/moveDown
  • /player/navigation/moveLeft
  • /player/navigation/moveRight
  • /player/navigation/select
  • /player/navigation/back
  • /player/playback/play
  • /player/playback/pause
  • /player/playback/stop
  • /player/playback/skipNext
  • /player/playback/skipPrevious
  • /player/playback/stepForward
  • /player/playback/stepBack

It doesn’t support navigation commands, but it should support basic playback commands from a companion app (e.g. Android or iOS). This requires a local Plex Media Server on the network.

is that going to be added in? I noticed that I can’t use the keyboard up/down/left/right to navigate either. So I am assuming using an IR remote won’t work either?

In PMP, remote controls and input maps were concerns of the TV layout and there aren’t plans to bring that to Desktop. The Desktop layout isn’t intended to be navigated with a remote control.

Thank you for the clarification. Is it safe to say that Plex is no longer interested in a pc class HTPC? You’re focusing on Apps and Set Top boxes?

I think it’s safe to say that apps and streaming devices have been a focus for a long time at Plex and this is another step in that direction.

While I am sure this will not please the power Plex users, it is a smart business decision. Cheers.

Just went to give the new Plex a try on my MacBook, was trying to keep an open mind, but… no keyboard navigation? Seriously? I’ve gotten used to the perioidic removal of functionality but this is just a joke…
