Hi All,
I’m new to Plex and I’m about to build a new Plex client. Being an open-source addict, I’d rather use Linux than Windows, but I see there’s no native player for Linux. I’m OK with using the web interface if it’s feature-equivalent. What features are available in the app which aren’t available in the web client?
From the top of my head:
The native client natively supports more formats/codecs, reducing the need to transcode your videos… while playback via a browser is obviously significantly more restrictive (requiring your server to do more of the heavy lifting).
The native player also supports downloading your media so you can watch it while being on the road (I don’t remember if this requires a Plex Pass membership)
Audio-passthrough over HDMI and native support for all types of subtitles (i.e. without requiring transcoding on the server) is a big one, IMHO.
Keep in mind that there are only builds for Plex Media Player for Linux, which is “feature frozen” now.
