How are you using Plex app? (not PMP)

Player Version#: 1.9.0

Using Plex in fullscreen on my mac to watch video on a large monitor or using windowed mode when doing work close to the monitor. For that purpose the best choice is Plex Media Player 2.x (or soon 3.x?). It has nice UI and is usable on a large screen when sitting at a distance as well as when sitting in front of the screen working and having it in windowed mode.

I am not sure I see what purpose the other Player app “Plex” serves. It basically is Plex web as standalone app. Thus one could as well use Plex in the browser and have the same experience. Even the keyboard shortcuts are identical. It is only controllable with a mouse, meaning I can not use it from a distance. How are others using that app? What’s the advantage of Plex app over the browser?

Really glad that Plex team decided to continue work on PMP. Although it seems PMP 3 got stuck as it was teased early march but never saw an update since.

Browsers have a very limited support for native media playback (mostly h.264 video and AAC audio). Therefore, Plex will be required to transcode content in many cases when streaming through your browser.
The Plex desktop client might look the same but it support much more formats / codecs for direct playback. Also it allows to download files for local-only playback.

Our Plex app for Windows and Mac computers is a standalone application that has the layout of our regular web app, but pairs it with much more robust playback capabilities as well as the ability to download items for offline use.

Some other differences are highlighted here:
