Apple TV 4k (2021) HDR color banding

Any updates?

I don’t have anything further just yet, I’m afraid, but soon

Wow I want to know what Plex employees have been using to watch 4K media server content cause it wouldn’t be Plex that’s for sure. The color banding in the new player is so awful that I had to go back to the old player. I doubt if you work at Plex this is acceptable when watching movies with your family and friends.

Wait you can still go back to the old player? I thought they disabled that?

Also for those of you wondering, still happening in AppleTV 4k 2022. It’s a new player issue.

I wonder if the stuttering I am getting with some, not all, HDR content is related to the root cause of this problem. Infuse Pro and the old player in plex play the content properly. I thought about posting about it. Let me know what people think. If I should post separately about it or not.

Just bought a Apple TV 4K (2022) and have noticed this exact issue as well.

Plex app shows severe banding in some scenes meanwhile Infuse plays it just fine.

How is this not an urgent fix? Your software on a flagship product is fundamentally broken. I find it absurd that plex pass customers have been waiting for a fix since May 2021 when the issue first surfaced. What a joke.

I also just bought a 2022 Apple TV and noticed horrible banding in a Frozen Planet II Remux. I tried it also on my iPhone 14 Pro and noticed it there as well. To be honest I’m shocked and disappointed to see that this has gone unresolved for a year and a half. Off to infuse I go…

The update on the TestFlight beta channel fixes the HDR colour banding issue for me, as mentioned in the update notes. My main problems were banding on blues and greys and red/green noise in some shades of brown (like the sand in Dune).

Version 8.12 (4269) running on a 2021 Apple TV 4K and a Sony A80J. Everything looks great now.

Thank you so much Plex team! The new beta has resolved this problem for me and I couldn’t be more thrilled. I have been waiting for this fix for a long while now and it was the main issue I had with playback.

After using it since release, something still feels off to me. The colours look great but now it feels like videos are playing at 23 fps rather than 24. I can’t really explain it but it’s almost like there’s a slight lag or choppiness to the video. Motion settings on my tv are unchanged but when going back to the public version, it looks smoother, as it should.

Turning frame rate matching on or off doesn’t improve or change anything… it just looks like the plex app isn’t keeping up with the video.

It happens on every video I’ve played, 1080p/1080i, 4K, high bitrate, low bitrate, SDR and HDR.

For everyone like me who doesn’t want to switch to infuse, I really recommend turning on the ā€œoldā€ player in the plex app settings until this is fully resolved. I’ve been using it for months now and it works well enough to the point I kind of forgot I set it that way.

The only real issue is it doesn’t play Dolby Vision from mkv, but I can tolerate HDR10 fallback for now. If I really need DV I flip over to infuse temporarily. And I don’t think DV is working properly in the ā€œnewā€ player anyway, color banding notwithstanding.

Interesting, I haven’t noticed this behavior yet but I’ll keep an eye on it this weekend and see if it crops up. So far I’ve just been happy to have the banding gone!

I am from Apple TV 2017, everything was perfect. now with apple tv 4K 2022 i have banding on hdr and dolby vision and black levels on hdr are completely out of phase. I was shocked to find this Thread dating back over 1 year! amazing that they haven’t solved it yet. unfortunately infuse is not the solution because it does not reproduce mkv Dolby Vision profile5. only solution is to go back to Apple TV 4K 2017 ??

DV Profile 5 should just work fine in Infuse. You sure it’s Profile 5?

Are you on a TV that actually display frame info (LG is just pressing the green button a bunch). Wonder if it’s actually displaying a 24hz stream to the tv or actually a 23hz one.

Also I’m guessing it’s too late to join the beta?

Unfortunately my Sony doesn’t display frame rate, just resolution and dynamic range information. Haven’t been able to find any settings to smooth things out. Downgraded for now.

As for the beta sign up, I’m not sure.

I assume the .12 version will be out for non beta soon enough, I can look and let you know.

I’m confused, the first two files are very clearly not listed as DV in MediaInfo?

First one is DV Profile 5, second is DV Profile 8 with a HDR10 fallback layer. P8 is not and probably never will be supported on AppleTV which is why you get HDR10.

Also Infuse absolutely supports DV profile 5.
