Anything new on this topic? I would very much like to use Plex on the new Apple TV 4K, but can only get proper HDR color (minus banding) in Plex on the previous generation Apple TV 4K. My only options appear to be using Infuse on the new Apple TV 4K or using my old Apple TV 4K which seems completely backwards.
Unfortunately, no.
Just get the monthly/yearly Infuse pass, depending on how cynical you are. For the price of a couple lattes you get peace of mind. Nowadays I just check in here every two weeks or so cause Iām curious, not cause I necessarily need it solved (although to be completely clear I still find the situation completely unacceptable)
If infuse was even close to feature parity with plex clients I would gladly pay for it, but it isnāt close at all.
Ergo the USD 0.99 per month sub or ridiculously low USD 10 per year to enjoy all of Plexās deficient āfeaturesā i.e. actually do what a player shouldā¦
.
the money is beside the point. the point is Infuse isnāt a complete solution either, youāre just choosing different tradeoffs. If itās all you need then Iām happy for you.
Not sure, think you misunderstand, we are using PMS with infuse.
I understand.
Just adding that I too have this issue with color banding when 4K HDR is played through Plex. Infuse has no issues when playing the same media. Unfortunately I have to pay for Infuse now because Plex still has not fixed this issue. I prefer the Plex interface, so Iām hoping this will be fixed!
Iāve attempted to reproduce this using the same movie, but do not have any banding issues at all on my Apple TV 4K (2021) with my Sony Z9D. Are you able to provide a sample file to reproduce this issues, please?
To me itās much more noticeable in HDR videos. were you watching an HDR version of it?
Yes, I was. I used an HDR Remux of Blade Runner 2049, and compared the scene with the one shown in the screenshot.
ok I just made a sample from a movie I know had bad banding and Iāll verify it on my Apple TV later tonight.
I also reported this issue a few months ago and would be happy to provide a sample file to assist in debugging. I can reproduce on many films (all UHD Bluray Remux with HDR) but I first noticed it on the Marvel Studios intro on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2, among others (see the red background as it appears towards the end of the intro).
I am using the 2021 Apple TV 4K (issue does not happen on previous 4k model with same settings and tv)
Latest version of app and server on PC.
If it helps, my tv is an LG OLED C9
Yep, this is what I see as well. I sent two sample videos to DaveBinM too so hopefully this will help illuminate the issue.
I was able to reproduce the issue with one of your samples, but not the other, but Iāve added them to our issue on this.
I do wonder if some TVs are more susceptible to this than others, as almost all the reports in this thread are related to LG OLEDs, but I do not see the issue present on my Sony Z9D, aside from one sample so far
@DaveBinM Just for your reference, I have a Panasonic FZ950 OLED display (specifically a TH-55FZ950U), which also exhibits the colour-banding behaviours noted above.
That panel is also made by LG (as are almost all OLED panels), so might be similarly susceptible, however, this is just speculation at this stage that some panels or TVs are more susceptible.
