Apple TV 4K and HEVC (X.265)

Apple TV 4K has been around for some time now and it has capabilities for playing HEVC encoded 4K movies direct -
but not from PLEX.

Why is that so? And why is nothing happening on this issue?

For the latest builds some HEVC encoded 4K files can now be played on my Apple TV 4K.
But only about 25% of them - and I dont se the pattern.

Plex Media Server has not been updated to work with Fragmented MP4 streaming yet.

As a result:

  1. The file MUST be in MP4 format.
  2. The file MUST have the FourCC set to “hvc1”.
  3. The audio MUST be in an AppleTV natively supported format (AAC, E-C3,AC3, PCM, MP3).
  4. The subtitles MUST be in an AppleTV natively supported format (mov_text,tx3g,ttxt,text).
  5. The bit depth can be either 8- or 10- bit (Dolby Vision is not supported)
  6. The resolution can be up to a maximum of 3840 x 2160

I too wonder why Plex hasn’t been updated to play some/many/my HEVC files on the AppleTV. When Plex files I can use the InFuse app on the AppleTV to play the same files, served by Plex server, without transcoding etc. It seems Plex is is behind. I’d rather this work than see VR features.
