Apple TV 4K audio sync issues with enhanced player

Hello, I just wanted to weigh in on this as a paying customer. Please continue investing resources into figuring out a solution for this. Very frustrating issue for me and none of the workarounds are getting me to a place that checks all the boxes.

Yes, in order to achieve lip-sync i have to use old player.

I just bought an AppleTV Gen3 and we noticed audio sync problems that we’ve never had before. We’ve been running Plex on a FireTV stick for a couple of years but switched to AppleTV because the sticks keep dying. I sure hope this is being taken seriously, as we really like the AppleTV overall - Plex is the only app having problems :confused:

@DaveBinM

They aren’t.

Yeah, its terrible. I am currently using VLC on the apple tv. it connects to my plex server and doesnt have the audio sync issue.

VLC app on the apple tv is working for me. Give that a shot, because plex devs are too busy working on features that no one cares about.

As a Plex Lifetime Subscriber, seeing this issue drag on for as long as it has is highly disappointing. Plex developers, you need to take this seriously and be providing regular updates as to your progress on addressing this issue!
This issue makes Plex unusable when viewing through Apple TV, which I for one have scattered all about my house.
I am now forced to use a different app to play video content, which again, is an unacceptable proposition given how long this issue has been dragged out.
What is your timeline for addressing this issue?

I’m also highly frustrated with this issue, but I don’t think haranguing Plex employees about it will help. Reading between the lines, this may be a complex issue crossing the borders of hardware/OS/API capabilities from Apple, open source packages (the new video player) the developers are (rightly) leaning upon), and Plex’s own internal bandwidth. The fact that Plex hasn’t been more detailed in their responses also leads me to guess that there’s an issue with Apple’s support, and they as good partners don’t want to throw them under the bus publicly.

I for one appreciate that we’re getting some sort of updates, and also really hope this gets fixed at some point soon. But I’d suggest being a bit more polite personally.

Infuse and Vlc work fine with the same files.

Vlc a open source app, infuse an app that’s A LOT smaller then plex. Everything works great there.

This issue is three years old. They deserve the ■■■■ they are getting from paid customers who are also willing to be free QA testers. This is inexcusable.

Their internal bandwidth seems to be focused on ■■■■ literally no one who’s pays for Plex lifetime wants (streaming tv channels
)

The only update in three years is “we are looking into it”. That’s not an update. That’s barely an acknowledgment.

Infuse works perfectly well

I tried infuse as well. It works fine.

Yup, I only watch Plex on my Apple TV since 2015 without issue. Now all of a sudden this pops up and I can no longer use Plex anymore. VLC works but its not as pretty as Plex. Infuse will play everything you throw at it flawlessly and very much worth the 99 cents a month fee.

Interesting that Linus Tech Tips are now refusing to work with Plex going forward because of all the issues they are having with Plex client apps (not this specific issue in fact). Just seems to show how Plex appear have spread their developers too thin rather than fixing their core issues. Doesn’t give me much hope that this will get resolved, but we live in hope.

hes not wrong, plex stop caring about its core users and functionality years ago

@DaveBinM @Stevenson-Price @chfredrickson @Ridley

My setup:

  • Receiver: Denon AVR-X3400H
  • TV: LG C7
  • Apple TV: A2843 (HDMI connected to AVR)

I am also suffering from these audio sync issues. It’s just OK to watch, but very noticeable.

From reading this thread I feel a lot of people are disappointed or even frustrated that this is not getting resolved after a considerable amount of time (especially since it’s clear competitors core players don’t suffer from this issue). I personally belief your developers are hard at work to fix this as the Plex for Apple TV user base is important and ever-growing. That said, I do belief it’s important to communicate openly and frequently for as long as the issues stands.
It would also help to document this as a known issue and specify all known factors that lead to it.

  • What is the state of the issue? Identified, fixed internal/testing, blocked upstream (mpv)?
  • Is there any way users can help providing additional logs?
  • Is there any way we can help by testing mpv builds on macOS/tvOS?

We’re continuing to work on this issue internally; keep in mind that it can be very challenging to test these kinds of problems that are often specific to particular AV hardware. We have also been comparing against other players and finding that, at least on some hardware, they’re no more consistent than ours. We also see some that produce desync in the opposite direction with some AV hardware, so we need to be very cautious to avoid creating issues for people whose setups currently work by mimicking other players’ behavior.

We have a change currently in internal testing that may improve this for some users, but still needs some additional stability improvements before it’ll be ready for broad deployment. Nevertheless, our current intent is to include the change in an upcoming release, in a “flagged-off” state; once that release is out, we’ll be able to turn on the change for individual user accounts to allow people to test the new behavior with their hardware if they’re interested. I can’t provide an exact timeline on this (holiday travel, internal release processes, and Apple review time together make this very difficult to predict), but we’ll let you all know when we have something ready for you to try.

Thanks very much for your patience with this issue.

Thanks for the update Ridley.

Can you clarify which issue you are referring to in your post?

  1. The actual issue this thread was created for a long time ago - specific audio sync issues on 4K content
  2. The recent issues that started with TV OS 16 that appears to affect audio sync on all content (but no where near as badly out of sync as the long standing 4K specific issue)
  3. Both

Thanks.

The best workaround I’ve found for this issue is to use Infuse and add 100ms.
This gives me a normal experience watching a movie (1080p, x264).

Is there anyone who have found a better solution?

There have been audio sync issues on all format types for a long time, not specific to tvOS 16, and not exclusive to 4K. We’re working to make all content as in-sync as possible

Sorry, I humbly think the many who have followed this thread will disagree with you there. There was nothing wrong with Plex on Apple TV before TVOS16 apart from the MASSIVE 4K Audio Sync problems. I have used Plex on LG TV, Xbox, PC, Nvidia Shield TV and ONLY the Apple TV was broken and only in 4K until recently.

The fact you don’t even seem to understand and acknowledge the problem leaves little comfort this will ever gets fixed. So you saying it is completely broken on Apple TV and has been for some time. SERIOUSLY?!?

I am done with this thread and already planning my migration away from Plex. I will continue paying to use Infuse (WHICH AGAIN WORKS PERFECTLY!!! - BUT WHY SHOULD I PAY TWICE JUST TO WATCH MY MEDIA).

Looking at Jellyfin, in case anyone else is thinking the same. Really don’t want to have to as have better things to do with my time. But will run it alongside Plex until I have happy everything is migrated over and working correctly. I know now solution is perfect, but the basic requirement to play the dam media isn’t much to ask is it? Now Plex have admitted their app has been broken for a long time, what is the point!

Good luck to everyone else is suffering with this farce. Good bye.

P.S. Linus Tech Tips are completely correct! Plex has lost it’s way and abandoned their core customers.
